ed Fund. The balance is now
at $5,000, with parents and
teachers contributing to the
fund. Each year, awards go to
a handful of students who
have demonstrated the most
outstanding improvement in
achievement, behavior, atten-
dance and participation. This
year, 10 students received
$100 U.S. savings bonds from
the fund.
Green has been an ad-
ministrator at Willow Run
five years and remembers the
worst period, 1986-87, when
enrollment dropped sharply
and 22 teachers were laid off
mid-year.
"We had come through a
bad time and the major priori-
ty of the board was to find
someone who could motivate
people and the community to
feel better about the schools,"
says Green. "Joe has done that
and I think he would even tell

you beyond his wildest
dreams. Joe made all of us
believe it could happen and
everybody went out and made
it happen."
Dr. Yomtoob admits to
working 10-15 hour days. Al-
though Willow Run has made
notable improvements under
his direction, he continues to
set new goals for the district.
In May, Dr. Yomtoob receiv-
ed an evaluation from the
Willow Run Board of Educa-
tion of 3.37 on a 4.0-point
scale.
Said board trustee Carol
Bone, "If we had given him
straight fours, he'd think his
job was done and move on. We
don't want that."
Yomtoob pledged that even-
ing, "In the next three to five
years, we will be the best
school district not only in
Michigan, but in the na-
tion." ❑

chairmen of key committees.
Michael S. Feldman has

succeeds Peter Alter, the new
chairman of the Israel and
Overseas Committee.
LDC programs are designed
to develop the skills of lay and
professional leaders and to

the Jewish community. Its
focus includes recruitment,
education and training, as
well as recognition of lay

ments.

The committee educates the

about the tax advantages of
charitable giving and its role
in helping to build the assets

Earnings from the UJC go
toward meeting community

An attorney, Bigelman also
teaches courses on taxation at
Walsh College.
Weiss is an adjunct pro-
fessor at Wayne State Univer-

The Federated Endowment

by United Jewish Charities,
