T

alk about instant
foursomes!
When Dennis and
Cece Herman holler, "Golf,
anyone?" in their Newton,
Mass. household, they get a
chorus of yesses.
And that's why the 60-plus
Boston Maccabi Club con-
tingent will be in a class all
its own in the golfing portion
of the Jewish Community
Centers - North American
Maccabi Youth Games in
Detroit later this month.
In all likelihood, the Bean -
towners will have the only
golf squad featuring
quadruplets.
The road to the Detroit
Games began for the Her-
man quads in 1975, when
Cece Herman, at the time a
teacher and regular summer
golfer in suburban Boston,
became pregnant with what
she was told were twins.
"About three months
before I was due, I had an
ultrasound," said Mrs. Her-
man. That's when she found
out she would give birth to
an instant foursome.
On Jan. 19, 1976, Mat-
thew, Amanda, Seth and Bil-
ly Herman arrived — a little
bundle weighing a total of 10
pounds, 10 ounces. The in-
fants ranged in size from
Seth, at 3 pounds, 1 ounce, to
Amanda, a dainty 2 pounds,
4 ounces.
The babies' small size and
complications kept them
hospitalized for most of their
first three months. All were
home by early March, 1976.
About 18 months later, little
sister Tamra arrived.
With five tots in diapers,
golf was definitely on the
back burner for the Her-
mans. But when the quads
reached age 8, they were
allowed on the course as
players and Mrs. Herman
began teaching them.
"I would take them out on
the No. 1, 8 and 9 holes.
We'd make a little circle
there," said Mrs. Herman,
who brought her 9-iron and
played with the youngsters.
And as soon as little sister
Tamra was old enough, she
learned the sport.
Mrs. Herman has been the
kids' only golf coach. The
golf pro at Blue Hill Country
Club, where the Hermans
are members, discourages
private lessons for children,
preferring that they develop
their own golf swings. "Kids
move naturally in any sport
if you let them," he said.

The Hermans attend the
pro's weekly clinics and he
offers them tips at the driv-
ing range.
Do the quads like golf?
"They love it," said Mrs.
Herman. During the
summer, the Herman
youngsters caddy on the
weekends at Blue Hill and
play during the week. For
the past two years on Mon-
days, when Blue Hill is clos-
ed, they have competed in
tournaments.
In 1988, Matt was the Blue
Hills champion for the
under-16 set. Last year,
brother Billy took the title.
This year Matt, the only
quad who is seriously con-
sidering pursuing golf, shot
an 85 in qualifying for the
Massachusetts Junior Golf
tournament. He usually

shoots in the upper 70s to
upper 80s. Brother Seth shot
an 87 to qualify for the
Boston Globe's Catholic
Youth Organization
tourney.
Although golf is their fav-
orite sport — they even wat-
ch it on television — the
Hermans aren't a one-sport
family. Daddy Dennis, a
CPA and lawyer, has run in
two Boston Marathons.
Among the quads, the boys
play on the Canton soccer
and baseball teams, while
Amanda runs track and
cross-country and is on the
soccer team. She also dances
ballet and jazz.
In April of 1989, the quads
became bar mitzvah in a
ceremony in which they read
both Ashkenazic and
Sephardic haftara portions.
There was a near-crisis
when Matthew and Amanda
were invited to play on the
Boston Maccabi squad: Billy
beat out Seth in a playoff for
the only other spot that was
open.
"It was very tense around
the house then," recalled
Mrs. Herman. "But then a
gymnast on the squad hurt
herself and they needed an-
other individual-sport par-
ticipant. There wasn't an-
other gymnast, so Seth got to
go as a golfer."
The entire Herman clan
plans to be in Detroit Aug.
19-26 for the Games. ❑
