Allison Atlas
To Try Mother's
Bone Marrow

TZVI DOLE

Special to The Jewish News

A

llison Atlas, a Jewish
leukemia patient, has
decided to attempt a
bone marrow transplant
from her mother, the 21-
year-old from Bethesda, Md.,
said this week.
"My condition is absolute-
ly getting worse," Atlas said
in Seattle, Wash. "If I don't
have a transplant soon and I
get a bad infection, I won't
be able to get a transplant
[at all]. I just don't feel I
have the luxury of waiting
any longer."
The mother's tissue is not
a perfect match. But of the
over 50,000 people tested
worldwide in a desperate $3
million search to find a com-
patible bone marrow donor
for Allison Atlas, Arlene
Atlas' tissue most closely
resembles her daughter's.
Doctors have counseled the
family against further delay.
Although matches for
other leukemia patients
have been found in the
course of the search, a match
for the former New York
University business major
remains elusive.
"I'd like to thank every-
body who has worked so
hard on this campaign and
volunteered," she said. "And
I'd especially like to thank
the 15 people who donated
their marrow for other
leukemia victims. Even
though I haven't found a do-
nor, we've been able to help
other people:'
Several weeks ago when
Atlas' condition began to
grow more serious, the fami-
ly travelled to the Fred Hut-
chinson Cancer Research
Center in Seattle for tests.
