Intermarriage
Tactics Fail?
In its first single-theme
issue in its 50 years of
publishing, the current
Journal of Jewish Communal
Service denotes all of its
106 pages to the Jewish
community's response to
intermarriage.
Several articles in the
issue maintain that the
previous strategy of preven-
ting intermarriage by
strengthening Jewish edu-
cation was a failure. A more
effective technique, they
suggest, might be to increase
outreach to intermarried
families as a way to enhance
Jewish identification.
According to Journal
managing editor Gail Naron
Chalew, intermarriage was
chosen as the issue's topic
because "it has implications
for all aspects of Jewish
communal work, a field
which many people say is in-
tended to assist the con-
tinuation of the Jewish peo-
ple."
The issue includes articles
by sociologists, psychologists
and Reform and Conser-
vative rabbis. Ms. Chalew
said she could not locate an
Orthodox rabbi willing to con-
tribute to the issue.
The quarterly is published
by the Conference of Jewish
Communal Service.
