rIbpol as Tevye the dairy
farmer in an encore presenta-
tion of Fiddler On the Roof
Aug. 7-11.
Fiddler On the Roof won a
Tony Award for Best Musical
in 1965. The musical's book
received a Tony and an
Academy Award. In the
1989-'90 production, the
original award-winning stag-
ing and choreography of
Jerome Robbins is being
recreated by Ruth Mitchell.
Fiddler celebrates the
values of family, tradition,
marriage and relationships.
Its humor and drama trans-
cend language barriers and
social customs. In 25 years
the play has opened in 37
countries in 18 languages
with the same impact it had
for 3,242 performances on
Broadway.
Based on the stories of
Russian-born Sholom
Aleichem, Fiddler On the
Roof unfolds in Anatevka, an
impoverished village in
Czarist Russia minutes before
the Revolution. The story
focuses on Tevye and his five
daughters.

Vandals Hit Cemeteries
In France, West Germany
Paris (JTA) - Anti-
Semitic cemetery vandals
struck again Saturday night
in France and West Ger-
many, defacing scores of
tombstones with swastikas
and violently anti-Jewish
slogans.
But the target in France
was, inexplicably, the small
Catholic cemetery of La
Salvetat-Saint Gilles, a town
near the city of Toulouse,
where Jean-Marie Le Pen's
right-wing, racist National
Front polled nearly 20 per-
cent of the vote in the last
elections.
Police said the vandals ap-
parently got "mixed up" and
spray-painted inscriptions
such as "Jews back to the
gas chambers" and "Nazis
will live again" on non-
Jewish graves.
The desecration was
discovered at noon Sunday.
In Stuttgart, West Ger-
many, meanwhile, more
than 60 headstones at a Jew-
ish cemetery were defaced
with Nazi symbols.
