PURELY COMMENTARY PHILIP SLOMOVITZ Editor Emeritus Nazis' Auto Fact Stealing Detected N azi policies of hiding truth about Jewish accomplishments and attainments in the arts, science and literature as well as technical discoveries have compelled German apologies in the post-war era. Even with the "Lorelei" by Heinrich Heine, which became virtually the German national anthem, its usage and actual existence was denied by the Nazis. The in- human policies created shame for the German people. The latest expose of "the big lie" is now revealed in an interesting account provided by a prominent electrical and mechanical engineer Frank L. Theyleg, who retired from 40 years of professional work in the community and with the Ford Motor Co. He was a leader in Technion. The famous discovery in- volving him was related by me in The Jewish News on April 12, 1946, and was syn- dicated by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency to the English-Jewish press in all English speaking countries under the title "Jew Gave Automobile to World." The story was about Siegfried Marcus, Berlin born, Viennese inventor, who was the first to perfect gasoline-driven motor vehicles. Upon the publication of my article, Frank Theyleg began professional testing and verified the Marcus discovery. He pursued that task as a grand-nephew of the inventor. The Nazis, as in all in- stances of hiding facts about creative Jews, denied that a Jew had perfected the modern automobile. Theyleg did not stop pursuing the task of af- firming his uncle's discovery. Now he informs us about the Nazi fraud to hide Marcus' achievements. His discovery is related in a letter I secured from him. Some years ago, we shared my research results into the work of my ancestor, the automotive pioneer Siegfried Marcus, which you published at that time. I noted that there is every expert indication that Marcus was indeed first in creating a func- tional gasoline-fueled motor vehicle with most design characteristics still used today, but that ap- plicable documented proof could not be located because such records were probably destroyed by the Nazis. Recently, when search- ing the Daimler-Benz files in Stuttgart-Untertuerk- heim, Germany, Mr. Mordechai Rimon, Kib- butz Davrat, whose grand- father was Marcus' brothel; located the attach- ed directive by the course welcome to publish both the original Nazi let- ter and my translation, at your convenience. Undertaking to expose outrageous Nazi distortions, Theyleg proceeded to do research that has rendered a great service. The revelation of the actual distortions is contained in the original Nazi confessional that accompanied Theyleg's message to me. Siegfried Marcus Marcus' First Auto Ministry of the infamous Joseph Goebbels, dated July 4, 1940, which clearly confirms that the Nazis eradicated the records of Marcus' pioneering work and also "aryanized" the motor vehicle by ordering the attribution of its crea- tion to Carl Benz and Got- tlieb Daimler, exclusively. I am also attaching my translation of that docu- ment and you are, of To the Directorate of the Daimler-Benz A.G. in Stut- tgart-Untertuerkheim: Concerns: The actual in- ventor of the automobile. In reply to your letter of May 30, 1940 — Dr. Wo/Fa.-. The Bibliographic In- stitute and the Publisher F.A. Brockhaus have been instructed that, in the future, in "Meyer's Conver- sation Lexicon" and in the "Great Brockhaus" not Siegfried Marcus but the two German engineers Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz are to be designated as the creators of the modern motor vehicle. By order /s/ Dr. Erckmann. The many Nazi falsifica- tions need recalling. The "Lorelei" by Heine is notable. In "Commentary" that ap- peared in The Jewish News, of Oct. 13, 1972, I gave this ac- count of the formal German apologies and the return of honor to the famously ac- claimed hymn: Another chapter is being added to the German atonement story. The Nazi crime is continually being relegated to a state of con- demnation. The New Ger- many repudiates the Hitler insanities, and the in- sanities even of the less guilty are rejected as abominations. Now we are about to witness a new demonstra- tion of decency: the renewal of recognition of the genius of Heinrich Heine. His name had been eras- ed from German records by the Nazis. The most popular of all German songs, "Die Lorelei" had been credited to an anonymous author by the Hitlerites. Whatever ex- isted of knowledge about Heine had been hidden. Now Germany worships him anew, and the man who has been called Ger- many's greatest poet- singer has been returned to the legacies of Ger- many's great literary accomplishments. Early this year it was an- nounced in Bonn that under the leadership of Continued on Page 43 Warrior Who Talks Tough Endowed With Softness A riel Sharon has never been out of the lime- light. The military hero of the war against Egypt was the advocate of political militancy and toughness in his tackling of the nation's needs. There was the negative aspect when he was blamed for the horrible Sabra and Shatilla mishap. Even then 1 lik. Now, he is again in a domi- nant role, supervising the Likud Government's respon- sibility for housing the Rus- sian newcomers to Israel. He has demanded extreme ac- tions on that score, for which he was overruled by a court decision which rejected utilization of hotels for im- migrant housing. Admired as "Arie," as he is affectionately called by his supporters in the public eye, in the media, he is the mili- tant extremist. It is as he was front-paged by the New York Times magazine on July 8 where Joel Bunkley por- trayed him as "talking tough?' He does not dispute the designation since he de- scribes himself in his auto- Warrior, biography as (Ibuchstone Books — Simon and Schuster). The Sharon autobiography is as much history as it is self evaluation. His life's ex- periences are recalled in large measure to defend his actions and policies. There was need to describe the tests he faced. Especially in the present crisis his views have great value in judging the threats and dangers as well as deter- minations to adhere to defen- sive national duties. Therefore, the autobiography already drew enough interest to create the demand for War- rior and have it extended in- to the newly published 550 page paperback. The paperback serves anew to indicate the alluded-to soft- ness in a man who is con- sidered the most militant among his devoted followers. The epilogue in Warrior provides us with a marvelous explanation of softness overshadowing extreme militarism. As Sharon defines himself on that score: In some ways Israel's political experience casts a somber shadow on our ability to rise above our own divisiveness. But there is room for optimism too. We are, after all, a people with almost 4,000 years of history linking one genera- tion to the next, a people who despite everything have been able to over- come whatever was in- flicted on us both by our enemies and by ourselves. It is the business of our generation to summon up that same genius and in- sure that our link in this ancient chain remains unbroken. We understand that clearly, all of us do. We also know that in the face of a mountain of problems, our parents and we ourselves have managed the most remarkable achievements. The paperback edition becomes compelling reading. The challenges demand fullest understanding of AO. Ariel Sharon "Arie" Sharon and his associates. In his new position as supervisor of housing for the Russian Jews there is also the demand for respect for this leader of many qualities who has emerged among the most criticized. His book is now available to the masses and should be utilized to understand him. It may also lead to admiring him. ❑
