Bruno Kreisky, Austrian Leader New York (JTA) —Bruno Kreisky, a born Jew whose actions during his reign as chancellor of Austria raised strong protests from Israel and the Jewish community for what was perceived as an unfair attitude toward Israel, died July 29 in Vienna. Kreisky, 79, a self-declared agnostic, was a controversial figure among Jews because of his relations with Arabs, particularly the Palestine Liberation Organization. Elected chancellor in 1970, Kreisky's record 13-year reign over Austria was marked by a great increase in Austria's relations with the Arab world and the PLO. While not enamored by the tactics employed by the Pa- lestinians, Kreisky recog- nized the PLO as the sole le- gitimate representative of the Palestinians and per- mitted the PLO to open an office in Vienna. Born to Irene Felix and Max Kreisky on Jan. 22, 1911, Kreisky attended schools in Vienna and joined the Socialist Youth move- ment. In 1935, he served 18 mon- ths in prison for activity in the Social Democratic Party, which had been outlawed. By 1947, the team had a regular Canadian Broad- casting Corp. show with a live audience. Wayne and Shuster appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show 67 times over the years, starting in 1958.
