FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 1990

ust like a mother .. .
going around telling
the doctors to take good
care of her children.
This was Ann Waldman
who came in from Toledo,
Ohio, to attend the recent sur-
prise 50th birthday party for
plastic surgeon doc Marshall
Shapiro, given by wife Dee .. .
No, it wasn't a shindig just for
doctors, but wherever guests
seemed to turn, there was one
of them around . . . and Ann
made certain they knew she
was watching out for her
children.
Dr. Lou Spagnola, Mar-
shall's chief in general
surgery, with wife Lucille, or-
thodontist Rick Lift and Judy,
Dr. Tony Messana and Patty,
Dr. Richard Zimmer and
Janice, Dr. Jerry Uzanski and
wife model Fran, Dr. Roger
Fenton and Marcia cele-
brating their 19th anniver-
sary, Dr. Harvey Roth and
Sandy, Dr. Ed Loniewski who
performed orthopedic surgery
on Marshall's knee from ski-
ing and son Mark Shaprio's
knee from playing center
with the Michigan State foot-
ball squad and daughter
Stacie Shapiro's knee from
gymnastics . . . Seemed like
Dr. Loniewski had also done
orthopedic surgery on most of
the people at the party . . . He
himself was recuperating
from surgery . . . only a much
more serious one . . . Dr.
Uzanski also had knee
surgery to repair torn car-
tilage from jogging.
No problem getting Mar-
shall to drive over and look at
Portofino clothes while
manager David Green helped
keep him busy . . . but how do
you explain a dance floor be-
ing delivered when arriving
home? . . . Marshall saw a
truck in their driveway and
asked what was going on ... .
Dee replied, "Keep driving!"
. . . The floor was being in-
stalled in back outside their
home . . . and Marshall pro-
bably thought Dee was going
to do a dance exhibition with
partner Corey Riojas or
Stacey was having a picnic
. . . or did he?
Sunday, Marshall attended
a surprise 50th party for
Elaine Hecker, Dr. Earl
Hecker's wife, and returned
home for a big happy 50th
Mexican fiesta for himself,
given by Dee, as the Billy
Rose Quintet were dressed
like Mexicanos and Don

Pedro's Mexican food fare and
margaritas galore were en-
joyed by all . . . including Earl
and Elaine Hecker . . . In-
stead of blowing out 50
candles on a cake, Dee gave
Marshall a baseball bat to
break the colorful hanging
pinata (a Mexican tradition)
with candy spurting out.
Celebrants included music
composer Joe Lo Duca and ac-
tress/makeup artist wife Lin-
da, popular TV personality
Sylvia Glover, Marilyn
Pollack, celebrity photogra-
pher Linda Solomon and at-
torney hubby Barry with Lin-
da's mom, Mona Rappaport,
Bette Appel, barrister Sandy
Roth who couldn't get his
video recorder open to take
pictures, and Judy with her
parents Millie and Leonard
Benowitz, Don and Dee
Finkbeiner.
Dr. Al Stines and wife Joan
who weren't able to catch a
goat at the last minute from
their home in Howell for front
yard decor at the party
(another Mexican tradition),
brought daughter Michele.
Janice Falk paraded around
with her new liposuctioned
knees that Dr. Shapiro did for
her . . . Mark and Stacie
presented him with a portrait
of themselves . . . Dee's
mother, Ann Waldman, didn't
come alone from Toledo .. .
aunts and uncles Leona and
Oscar Soldinger, Anne and
Leonard Davis, cousins Mar-
ty and Harriet Davis and
Ronnie and Lannie Katzman.

Marshall was part right .. .
Dee and Corey did put the
floor to use with a dance ex-
hibition to the Latin rhythms
of Billy Rose's "Mariachi"
quintet.
Where was Dee supposed to
be that Sunday? And why
wasn't she with Marshall at
Elaine's 50th surprise party?
. . . Dee said she had to attend
a shower . . . "What kind?"
asked Marshall. "Baby or
wedding?" . . . "Both,"
answered the nervous Dee.
"The bride is kind of preg-
nant" . . . As smart as he is,
Marshall bought the story .. .
or did he?
CONGRATS to Rachel
(Rae) and Henry Chace . . . on
their 55th anniversary . . .
The former Detroiters have
been living in Century
Village, Deerfield Beach,
Fla., the past 14 years .. .
Before retiring in 1975,
Henry used to give plaitzas at
Darbys Stanley Steamer in
Oak Park.
ROMAN TERRACE may

have burned down, but the
name lives on . . . Owner Bob
McDonald has converted all
his efforts into Roman Ter-
race Catering at Farmington
Elks Club.
IT'LL BE the first event
held in Temple Israel's 50th
year when third annual "The
Art of Food and Wine" fund-
raiser is tossed Aug. 11, 7:30
p.m.
Chairpersons will be
Richard Gershenson and co-
chairpersons Norton and
Sherrie Stern . . . with twice
as many restaurants from the
700 attendee shindig of 1989
that overflowed into the Her-

Shopping and a
party kept Dr.
Shapiro away ...
but long enough?

man Hall Atrium, canopied
courtyard and new Terrace
social hall . . . Initial gala in
1988 was started by Alan
Kaplan and drew 400.
Intrigue will play for danc-
ing while musicians stroll in
the courtyard.
$35 admission includes
wine auction, dancing, 100
select wines for tasting and
bevy of foods . . . $10 raffle
tickets will have choice gifts
. . . Call Temple Israel,
661-5700.
BEVERLY (PEISS) Price,
registered dietician and exer-
cise physiologist, has left
Sinai Hospital to embark on
a new venture with hubby of
almost two months, Dr. David
Price . . . The former Sinai
dietician and psychologist
David have teamed up again,
this time with their "Living
Better Sensibly" business in
the practice of preventative
health care.
BERNIE KERNER, one of
the original owners of the
famed Darbys Restaurant on
Wyoming and Seven Mile
with stepather, Sam Boesky,
took me on a visit to First of
America in Oak Park . . .
There in the bank's vault
were the original recipes in a
Darby's envelope . . . Bernie
says Darbys never even made
some of the dishes called for
in recipes by a mail order
company . . . Then again,
there were two restaurants
with the same name .. . The
original Darbys without an
apostrophe in its name, and
another Darby's with the
apostrophe . . . The recipes
could only be from the latter.
