Sinaisky Leads DSO
At Meadow Brook

Russian conductor Vassily
Sinaisky leads the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra in an
all-Thhaikovsky program for
its final 1990 summer con-
certs at Meadow Brook 8
Aug. 9 and Aug. 12.
Born in Leningrad in 1947,
conductor Sinaisky studied at
the Moscow Conservatoire
under the renowned Ilya
Musin. Upon graduation, he
was offered the post of assis-
tant to Kirill Kondrashin,
then chief conductor of the
Moscow Philharmonic Or-
chestra. Mr. Sinaisky toured
throughout the Soviet Union
and Eastern and Western
Europe.
r
As a result of winning the
gold medal in the 197 Kara-
jan competition in Berlin (the
only Soviet conductor to be so
honored), he was engaged to
conduct such orchestras as
the Berlin PhilharmoniC,
Dresden Staatskapelle,
Gewandhaus, Helsinki
Philharmonic, Tokyo Sym-
phony
and
Czech
Philharmonic.
A further result of the Kar-
ajan Competition success was
his appointment as chief con-
ductor of the Latvian -
phony Orchestra, with whom
he made many foreign tours.
Recently named conductor of
the Bolshoi Ballet and Opera
Theatre and artistic director
of the Maly Orchestra, Mr.
Sinaisky made his United.
States debut with the *San
Diego Symphony in February
1989, returning in November
to take part in its "Treasures
of the Soviet Union" festival.
