siders that connections to
Rabbi Greenberg or the
FTOR are poor career moves
and they will "suffer the
consequences." Rabbi Weiss
said he was shocked by the
"bullying, strong-arm tac-
tics."
He also said he received a
call from Rabbi Benjamin
Walfish, the RCA's exec-
utive director, expressing
serious concern that Rabbi
Weiss was on the executive
committee of the FTOR, and
telling Weiss to resign.
"Soon after," the rabbi said,
"I received a certified letter
from the RCA asking: 'Are
you a member of the
FTOR?' "
"I wrote back, 'Yes, I am a
member, and I want to
understand what are the
halachic issues [of Orthodox
law] you are raising [that
preclude membership in
such an organization]? I'm
not aware of any.' I asked for
a response," said Rabbi
Weiss, "and I have not
received one.
"If someone can prove to
me that the FTOR is clearly
not halachic [according to
RCA and Yeshiva Univer-
sity standards], that's an-
other story,'_' said Rabbi
Weiss, "but there is no such
evidence. I have said openly
that I don't think the way to
handle [any spiritual
dispute] is through threats
or veiled threats." The
charges of Orthodox McCar-
thyism have been building
for years. In 1970, Rabbi
Chaim Dov Keller, dean of
the Telshe Yeshiva's
Chicago branch, reported to
an Orthodox convention:
"We are told of 'Mc-
Carthyism in Jewish Or-
thodoxy' and of the sordid
situation that prevails in the
rightists' camp."
In 1988, Rabbi Greenberg
wrote, defending himself
from attack: "What sort of
hatred leads one to
misrepresent and use Mc-
Carthyist methods — partial
quotes out of context, giving
false and sinister interpreta-
tions — to destroy the
credibility of someone else?"
Rabbi Riskin, dean of
Yeshivat HaMivtar in
Israel, recently told the Jew-
ish Week of similar pressures
there. The rabbi said that
when he invited Nehama
Leibowitz, an 84-year-old
woman who is a respected
rIbrah scholar, to teach in
his school, the haredim
(right-wing Orthodox corn-
munity) circulated "a
public denunciation of me,
personally."
Rabbi Riskin said that the
haredim "and Ray
[Eliezer] Schach in par-

titular" declared that any-
one ordained by Rabbi
Riskin will not be accepted
as a rabbi by Israel's Or-
thodox establishment.
The HaMivtar dean also
reported that Schach, spiri-
tual mentor of Israel's most
influential Orthodox polit-
ical party, issued a warning
that anyone who studies
with Riskin will find "his
end will be bitter."
Even as the RCA is trying
to suppress its liberal wing,
Rabbi Angel said that right-
wing pressure is affecting
the judgment of those whose
determinations of Orthodox
law should theoretically be

Insiders.

limited to talmudic prece-
dent, not popular opinion.
For example, Rabbi Angel
said "great scholars" serve
on the RCA Halachah com-
mittee that rules on ritual
and behavioral guidelines.
But when the rabbi was ask-
ed by the Jewish Week to
name the rabbis on this
committee, he said: "I don't
think [their names] should
be made public. They may
get scared. I'm not scared,
but the rabbis might get
nervous . . . [if] they are an-
swerable to a certain consti-
tuency, so that will color
their decisions."
The move to expel Rabbi
Greenberg has been tern-
porarily put on hold, accor-
ding to RCA insiders, re-
portedly because of the
threat of publicity and the
intervention of Orthodox
philanthropists.
Rabbi Hollander, one of
Rabbi Greenberg's most
vocal opponents at the hear-
ings, confirmed that the
committee received
testimony in favor of the
CLAL leader from influen-
tial philanthropist Ludwig
Jesselson, chairman of the
board of Yeshiva University,
as well as Nobel laureate
Elie Wiesel. Rabbi
Hollander said he chastised
Mr. Wiesel for becoming in-
volved.
One of the points on which
Norman Lamm, president of
Yeshiva University, has
been particularly attacked is
his role in exploring the pos-
sibility of a joint rabbinical
court governing Orthodox,
Conservative and Reform
Jews.
