With its skyscrapers, state- ly mansions, and swank boutiques; its museums, sidewalk artists and views of Central Park — famous Fifth Avenue has something to suit every tourist's tastes. For the Jewish traveler, its special attractions include the largest Jewish museum in the Western hemisphere, the world's largest Reform synagogue, and a world- renowned Jewish research in- stitute — all evidence that Manhattan's grandest avenue has Jewish sites on a grand scale, too. In fact, the Jewish traveler can create a Fifth Avenue tour focused only on Jewish highlights and never run out of sights to see. At the New York Public Library at 42nd and Fifth, the Jewish Division houses 120,000 volumes of Judaica. Then, one block north on 43rd, the Israel Discount Bank Displays Israeli art. Further north, at the Dia- mond Dealers Club, just off Fifth at 47th, Chasidic Jews were hurrying in and out, ready to make deals on priceless gems. Membership in this club is 90 percent Jewish, and there's even a kosher canteen and small synagogue above the club itself. Much farther north, where the street signs along Fifth Avenue change to "Museum Mile," is the former Vander- bilt Mansion at 86th and Fifth, which is now the world headquarters of the YIVO In- stitute for Jewish Research, the major center for the study of East European Jewry. YIVO draws scholars from around the world, but it's also a place of interest to Jewish travelers because of its multi- lingual library and its special exhibits. Just four blocks north of YIVO, the, Jewish Museum at 92nd Street, also housed in a former Fifth Avenue man- sion, is an entire world of Jewish art and artifacts, the largest museum of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. Its permanent collection in- cludes over 14,000 works of art and artifacts covering 4,000 years of Jewish history. Paintings, drawings, sculp- ture, textiles, coins and medals, ancient pottery — all are part of this repository. The collection of Jewish ceremonial art alone is one of the largest in the world and ranges from ancient Palesti- nian clay oil lamps to modern menorot. Besides all this, the museum often hosts special exhibits. South on Fifth Avenue, at 65th and Fifth, Temple Emanu-El dominates the southeast corner. The world's largest Reform synagogue is an imposing sight, with its great recessed arch enclosing the intricate Rose Window. The main sanctuary seats 2,500. The bimah is made of marble imported from France; the marble-columned Ark displays mosaic insets; and the dramatic stained glass windows are dramatic. This Fifth Avenue land- mark gets so many visitors that it's one of the few
