Israeli Climbers
Thought Killed
In Avalanche
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Hopes
have virtually faded of fin-
ding alive any of the 60
international mountaineers
who were buried under an
avalanche of snow last Fri-
day in the Pamir mountain
range in Soviet Tad-
zhikistan, near the Chinese
border.
The group, which included
four Israelis, had been at a
base camp at an elevation of
17,490 feet, preparing for
the final assault on the
23,406-foot Lenin Peak,
when a minor earth tremor
triggered a massive
snowslide. The entire camp
was carried some 1,000 feet.
Russian-speaking staff at
Israel Radio have been in
frequent contact with their
colleagues at Tadzhikistan
Radio and with Tadzhik offi-
cials, who report that rescue
teams from all over the
Soviet Union are experienc-
ing great difficulties battl-
ing climatic conditions in
the Pamirs, one of the
highest mountain ranges in
the world.
Some 40 bodies had been
recovered from the
snowslide by Wednesday
evening, and Tadzhik
sources said there was little
hope of finding anyone else
alive.
The mountaineers came
from several nations, in-
cluding Israel, the Soviet
Union, Czechoslovakia,
Switzerland and Spain.
Tourists from Bulgaria also
were reported to have been
swept away.
The Israelis, all members
of the some 100-strong Israel
Alpine Club, were identified
here as Binyamin Agur, 37,
originally from the Soviet
Union; Gabi Manobla, 22;
Ya'acov Peleg, 29; and Dov
Milo, a recent immigrant
from Italy.
All had experience climb-
ing.
