The Balance Between
Ritual And Ethics
SHLOMO RISKIN
Special to The Jewish News
T
o this day the Tisha
B'Av fast remains the
saddest day of the
Jewish year. Despite our
sovereignty over Jerusalem,
the Temple has still not been
rebuilt, and a Jerusalem
where the Temple area is for-
bidden to Jewish masses (lest
there be a violent reaction
from the Moslem worshippers
free to walk where they
please) means that there is
still much to mourn. But ex-
actly what are we mourning
for? A building, a concept, a
shortcut to the heart of God?
The haftara selection for
this week's portion, Devarim,
is the last of three haftaras
preceding the fast day. Two of
the haftaras are from Jere-
miah, the prophet who actu-
ally lived through two sieges
of Jerusalem, and this week
— the third — is from Isaiah,
chosen by the sages to be read
immediately before the Ninth
of Av as a beacon of insight in-
to why the Temple was
destroyed. Indeed, this Sab-
bath is called Shabbat Hazon
(the Sabbath of the vision)
after the first word of the
haftara.
We read how Isaiah merci-
lessly addresses the Jewish
people: "Hear the word of the
Lord, rulers of Sodom, give
ear to the Torah of our God,
you people of Gomorrah. To

what purpose is the multi-
tude of your sacrifices to me?
. . . I'm sated with the burnt
offerings of rams, and the fat
of fed beasts; and I delight not
in the blood of bullocks, or of
Iambs, or of he-goats. . . .
Bring no more vain offerings,
incense of abomination they
are to me; as for the new
moons and Sabbaths and the
calling of assemblies, I cannot
bear iniquity along with
solemn meeting. Your new
moons and your appointed
feasts my soul hates . . . your
hands are full of blood .. .
Wash you, make you clean;
put away the evil of your do-
ings from before my eyes;
cease to do evil. Learn to do
well; seek justice; relieve the
oppressed, judge the father-
less, plead for the widow . . ."
These seven verses, although
but a fragment of Isaiah's
words, capture the essence of
prophetic sensibility, as well
as alluding to the age-long
tension between prophet and
priest: Long before the
checks-and-balances of a
democratic government, Ju-
daism had its own built-in
system for maintaining a bal-
ance between the awesomely
exact ritual requirements in
the Holy Temple and an ethi-
cal spirit which saw itself as
the spearhead of liberty and
justice extending from the
particular out toward the
universal.
The prophets, not the
priests, stood alone as they
raged against the sins of the
_ people, especially when the
sins took on a veneer of reli-
gious respectability which the
