The army's ability to
move millions of people
quickly and efficiently has
been amply demonstrated.
The evacuation of a
relatively small number of
Jews from Germany and
Austria will present no
great problem to the
military. With the end of
the Japanese war, the ship-
ping situation should also
become sufficiently im-
proved to make such a
move feasible. The civilized
world owes it to this hand-
ful of survivors to provide
them with a home where
they can again settle down
and begin to live as human
beings.
Truman gave strong sup-
port to the Harrison plan in
his instructions to Eisen-
hower as if he anticipated the
demand for Palestine as the
site for the settlement of the
DPs. Truman concluded his
memo of August 31, 1945, by
declaring:
I am communicating
directly with the British
Government in an effort to
have the doors of Palestine
opened to such of these
displaced persons as wish
to go there.
Because it is so timely as
related to the New Exodus
responsibilities for the settle-
ment of Russian emigrees in
Israel, the earlier demands

justify the question of the pre-
sent responsibilities. Where
else should the rescued go?
The Hutler Agony of Sur-
vival brings to light the
legacies of hatred and in-
humanities that were expos-
ed in the DP horrors. The
story of the displaced persons
and their camps needs to be
told and to be retold.
The question is why the
delay when the protesting
outcries must never be
silenced?
With gratitude to Hutler,
the spirit of "my Jews" is not
silent. Agony of Survival will
always be among the sup-
plementary documents expos-
ing injustice. Thanks to Presi-
dent Truman it will be
another tribute to Americans
like Dr. Earl Harrison who
rise high in humanist ranks.
They delcare- the responsibili-
ty to assure that truth and
justice will never be stifled. ❑
