Did 'Times'
Distort Poll?

A July 9 New York Times
article misinterpreted a
Times/CBS News poll on
whether American aid to
Israel should remain at cur-
rent levels, claims the Near
East Report, a weekly
newsletter published by the
American Israel Public Af-
fairs Committee.
The article concluded that
U.S. support for Israel was
eroding because 33 percent
of those polled recommended
decreasing American aid,
while 61 percent said aid
should increase or remain
the same.
By comparing this to a
1989 ABC/Washington Post
poll that showed 72 percent
supported aid, the Times
concluded that support for
aid had declined. But Near
East Report concluded that
support actually increased
by comparing the data to
polls conducted in April,
1988, by the Los Angeles
Times and in May, 1988, by
Penn and Schoen. These
revealed, respectively, that
55 percent and 56 percent of
respondents favored aid.

Dead Wrong?

Also profiled in Vanity
Fair is John Cardinal
O'Conner, whom the maga-
zine calls "God's Man in
New York."
Known for wooing the
news media, the cardinal
does not please everyone.
Said New York Rabbi
Balfour Brickner, "He's
been a constant disappoint-
ment. He's wrong on abor-
tion, and he's wrong on just
about everything else. This
guy's marching backward
into the 15th century, and if
he had his way that's where
he'd take the rest of us.
Where is he on anything im-
portant? He hasn't got an
original thought in his head.
All he does is blather; he's
the religious equivalent of
Ronald Reagan." El
