Beauty in Gold & Diamonds for pro-Israel activists as Ally Milder, an energetic Jewish woman who used to work for Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), who is challenging Rep. Peter Hoagland, a first-termer who has racked up a good record on Israel. Despite Milder's ties to the Jewish political community, the pro-Israel groups are lin- ing up behind Hoagland. But Milder has demonstrated an ability to beat the odds. The Republican congressional campaign committee has in- cluded the Milder-Hoagland race in their list of "targeted" contests in which Republican challengers are seen as having a good chance to unseat Democratic in- cumbents. One of the most aggressive Jewish campaigns involves the effort by Scott Shore, a former official with the American Israel Public Af- fairs Committee, to unseat Democrat Harry Johnston in Florida. Shore, a conservative Republican, is blasting JOE BIDEN He maintains an impeccable pro-Israel record. Johnston's Middle East posi- tions in a campaign targeted directly at the Jewish com- munity. But Shore's ag- gressive tactics have irked some Jewish Democratic congressmen. Recently, a group headed by Rep. Larry Smith (D-Fla.), one of Israel's strongest supporters in the House, circulated a letter supporting Johnston's credentials as a supporter of Israel and obliquely criticiz- ing Shore's effort to win over the Jewish community. The "actors caucus" in Congress faces mixed pro- spects. Rep. Fred Grandy (R- Iowa), who played "Gopher" on the television series "The Love Boat," is seeking to become a major actor in helping Congress shape Middle East policy. In recent months, Grandy has become a favorite on the pro-Israel circuit — although he has not won many points with liberal Jewish groups more concerned with do- mestic issues. He is not ex- pected to face any difficulty in keeping his seat. But in Georgia, Rep. Ben Jones, who starred in "The Dukes of Hazard," has been targeted by the Republicans as vulnerable. Pro-Israel forces are lining up behind the former actor — and lib- eral Jewish groups are eager to see Jones survive the assault in a region of the country that is normally hostile to the liberal agenda. One more race has fas- cinating Jewish overtones. In California, former San Francisco mayor Dianne Feinstein and Sen. Pete Wilson are locked in a fero- cious and extraordinarily expensive gubernatorial race. If Feinstein wins, she will become the most. visible Jew- ish public official in the country — a prospect that may not bode well for some members of California's Jewish congressional dele- gation. Rep. Mel Levine (D-Calif.) is known to have strong senatorial ambitions. If Wilson, a Republican, wins the statehouse post, a Senate seat would open in two years. If Wilson loses his battle against Feinstein, he will remain in the Senate, thus providing an obstacle to Levine's ambitions. Rep. Barbara Boxer, an- other Jewish Democrat, re- portedly has her sights set on the Senate seat now held by the embattled Alan Cranston. Boxer is one of the new breed of energetic, polit- ically savvy Jewish women politicians. But California politicos argue that there is room for only one major Jewish polit- ical figure on the state scene — a position that would un- questionably go to Feinstein if she wins the election, which is expected to be close. The California race is significant for another reason. In 1992, Congres- sional districts will be redrawn. The party that con- trols the statehouse in Sacramento will have a powerful edge when district boundaries are redrawn. California is expected to gain seats overall. But Los Angeles, which boasts several Jewish represent- atives, will probably lose seats — leading to the pro- A.14k Gold Earrings "RreTITi7;44.. $1 050 B.14K Gold Necklace - Rpg7-$4,45.a_ $1,160 C. 18k Gold & Diamond Heart lzer$244. $1,960 D. 18K Gold & Diamond Pin - RINg:17-2-,244.. $1,540 E.14k Gold Designer Amethyst & Diamond Ring -Rtr-$27acia.
