every anguishing moment,
both the fear and the relief.
Huston captures Dolores'
whiny desperation and her
vindictiveness, and lets
herself look frumpy as well.
As an actor, Alda has always
seemed glib and superficial,
but those qualities here make
him a perfect Lester. Portray-
ing the clear-sighted Hallie,
Farrow is as winning as ever.
But Allen's own ramshackle
acting style is getting to be
annoying. There's a sense of
improvisation in his perfor-
mance and a certain self-
indulgence that's out of joint
with the rest of the acting.
Santo Loquasto's superb
designs for the film rely
heavily on bland beiges,
peaches and melon colors.
The proliferation of neutral
colors suggests the lack of
clear-cut moral positions
among the characters. (Fit-
tingly, Waterston's rabbi and
Orbach's hood wear dark,
heavy colors.) Ultimately,
though, Crimes and Misde-
meanors has no answers for
its characters' moral dilem-
mas. As Hallie says, "No mat-
ter how elaborate a philo-
sophical system you work
out, in the end it's gotta be in-
complete." ❑
