Yad Ezra

Continued from preceding page

Yad Ezra, located at 10
Mile Road, east of Greenfield
Road, is doing a "fairly good
job" feeding Detroit's Jewish
hungry, Dembs said. No one
who has come to the pantry,
including a few non-Jews,
has been turned away, he
said.
But the pantry has cut
back on the amount of food
each client takes home, he
said. Volunteers now ask
clients what foods they need
in an effort to preserve the
supply and to make sure
customers aren't taking
home food they won't eat.
The $40,000 Yad Ezra has
raised to purchase food, in-
cluding a second $11,000
check from the Fisher Foun-
dation, hasn't gone as far as
organizers had hoped be-
cause of the unexpected
number of people it has
served, Dembs says. The
pantry spends more than
$6,000 a month for food and
has handed out almost
55,000 pounds of food bet-
ween February to June.
One thing they didn't ex-
pect was the number of
Soviet Jews who walked
through the pantry's doors,
Dembs said.
"We weren't prepared for
it. But we have an obligation
to feed- them," Dembs said.
When Yad Ezra opened in
February, organizers ex-
pected single parents and el-
derly Americans to use the
pantry.
In February, the pantry
served 789 individuals with
11,186 pounds of food. Of
those 265 families who came
to Yad Ezra, 252 — or 95
percent — were Soviet Jews.
The numbers of Soviet
Jews using Yad Ezra has
decreased thanks to Jewish
Family Service screening
efforts. In March, 84 percent
of the 622 people who ap-
pealed to Yad Ezra for help
were Soviets. That percen-
tage remained the same -in
April. In May, 77 percent of
Yad Ezra's 789 clients were
Soviet Jews. The figure in
June was 80 percent.
All Yad Ezra clients, in-
cluding Soviets, are screened
by Jewish Family Service. A
family at 175 percent of the
poverty line, which includes
a family of four with a
$20,000 income, is eligible
for help, Dembs said.
Dembs has seen more sin-
gle parents and elderly use
the pantry. Some heard
about Yad Ezra through the
grapevine, he said. Others
came to Yad Ezra after Jew-
ish Family Service cut its
food stamp program in half
because of the financial
demands of Operation Ex-
odus to resettle Soviet Jews

in Israel. Those cuts put
more people in need of hun-
ger programs.
"But it can be really
difficult to come through
that door," said Yad Ezra's
Eizelman. "They've come as
close as the door, but haven't
come in."
Michelle Gavorin, 21,
understands how difficult it
is to ask for help. Gavorin,
who is eight months preg-
nant, sells clothes in a local
retail store and lives with
her mother in Oak Park.
After paying rent and
other bills, there isn't much
money left for food, she said.
At her mother's suggestion,
Gavorin began using Yad
Ezra in March.
She's able to stretch the
week's supply of food over a

month, Gavorin said. Yad
Ezra volunteers have also
helped her find hunger pro-
grams offered by the federal
government.
She doesn't want to
become a regular Yad Ezra
customer, Gavorin said.
"But I need their help until I
can get on my feet again."
To make sure Gavorin and
other clients have enough
food, Yad Ezra seeks more
funds, Dembs said. The
agency has a $110,000
budget which covers food
and administration costs,
but has collected less than
half that amount. -
Although Yad Ezra serves
mainly Soviet Jews, it
doesn't get any money from
Operation Exodus, Dembs
said. The Jewish Welfare
Federation also asked Yad
Ezra and other organiza-
tions to curtail fund-raising
activities so more money can
be collected for Operation
Exodus.
Dembs admits he wants
Yad Ezra to receive Opera-
tion Exodus funds. "But I
realize we're not in a posi-
tion to get it because the
money has already been
allocated," he said.
Yad Ezra has also sought a
$2,000 grant from Mazon —
Jewish Response to Hunger.
The organization must rely
on private donations or find
other grants. Fund-raising
tactics include establishing
a tribute fund, a direct mail-
ing campaign, and a coupon
drive where donors can pay
between $12 and $35 for
cases of food.
"We are getting grass
roots support," Dembs said. El
