ning process might take
awhile. "Detroit's center is
three times larger than the
one in Memphis," she said.
"I hope I can be a strength.
This Center is so large."
Having left the Memphis
center on July 1, Kleinfeldt
has spent the past few weeks
purchasing a home in
Southfield and getting ac-
quainted with her new
neighborhood. Kleinfeldt,
who is Orthodox, enrolled
her two daughters, ages 11
and 16, at Akiva Hebrew
Day School. Her son, 18, will
spend the next year in
Israel.
The hardest part about the
adjustment will be leaving
her family in Memphis, said
Kleinfeldt, who grew up in
the Tennessee city and has
never left her hometown.
But Detroit's reputation
lured her here.
"I wouldn't have taken
this risk (leaving home) if
Detroit wasn't a special
place," said Kleinfeldt.
During her tours of both
the Maple-Drake Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield and the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Jewish
Community Center in Oak
Park, Kleinfeldt was im-
pressed with the size of the
agency.
She sees lots of oppor-
tunities at the JPM center
off of 10 Mile Road, she said.
Although Kleinfeldt knows
about plans to expand the
Oak Park center, Plotnick
said Kleinfeldt was not hired
because of any expansion
plans.
"We don't know what will
happen at the 10 Mile facili-
ty. We did not hire her be-
cause of 10 Mile," he said.
Size isn't the only differ-
ence between the Memphis
and Detroit Centers,
Kleinfeldt said.
In Memphis, 95 percent of
the 9,000 Jews have a Center
membership, she said. "It is
the gathering place no
matter where a person wor-
ships," she said.
While Detroit's Center has
a large membership, it
hasn't attracted every seg-
ment of the Jewish popula-
tion, especially the Or-
thodox. She'd like to see the
JCC become a place where
all Jews feel comfortable
meeting.
"People say the Orthodox
live here, the Reform are
here and the Conservative
are there," she said. "I see
the Jewish people as a
whole." ❑
