Paris (JTA) — The head of
France's largest Orthodox
Jewish organization, claim-
ing it is "the only true repre-
sentative" of France's
600,000 Jews, has declared
war on its secular counter-
part.
Benny Cohen, 40, a busi-
nessman of North African
origin who is president of the
Consistory, openly challeng-
ed CRIF, the umbrella body
of major French Jewish
organizations.
The battle shaping up
seems to stem from
ideological and social differ-
ences no less than the tradi-
tional one of religious versus
secular conflicts.
The Consistory's new
leadership is generally of
North African origin and is
politically closer to Israel's
right-wing than the leader-
ship of CRIF, which tradi-
tionally has been considered
the political spokesman of
French Jewry.
CRIF, created in the im-
mediate post-war years, con-
sists of 64 Jewish cultural,
social and educational
organizations and institu-
tions.
They include the country's
main Jewish fund-raising
body, Fonds Social Juif
Unifie, which runs most of
the Jewish schools and social
welfare agencies, the United
Jewish Appeal, Jewish
Agency and Alliance
Israelite Universelle.
The Consistory controls
the Orthodox synagogues,
elects and appoints rabbis,
including the chief rabbi,
and administers most re-
ligious institutions such as
ritual slaughter, burial
societies and rabbinical
courts.
Israeli Oil Find
Isn't A Gusher
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Isramco,
a consortium of Israeli and
foreign investors prospec-
ting for oil, officially an-
nounced Tuesday that it is
abandoning its offshore
drilling at a site off the coast
of Ashdod, known as Yam-2
The group informed the
Tel Aviv Stock Exchange,
where its shares soared at
news of an oil strike two
weeks ago, that the pool of
high quality oil found at a
depth of 17,500 feet would
yield a maximum of 800
barrels a day.
While that may be enough
to warrant pumping at a
land-based site, it is insuffi-
cient for off-shore.
