t the usual rock con-
cert, a star performer

isn't likely to in-
troduce a tune saying, "This
song is about one of the great
rabbis of the 15th century."
But the appearance of
Schlock Rock is no ordinary
concert. The six-man group,
whose ages range from 23 to
29, hail from New York and
New Jersey and share a zeal
for rock 'n' roll and Judaism.
Lenny Solomon, the
group's lead singer who
started Schlock Rock as a
joke, sees a genuine connec-
tion between the two.
"The whole idea is that
people are listening to rock
'n' roll today," Solomon said.
"We are just trying to reach
out to kids on their level."
For its material, Schlock
Rock only has to consult a
siddur. Most of their songs
are parodies of well-known
hits. In place of "La Bam-
ba," the Schlockers sing
"Me-me-menorah."
The song about the great
15th-century rabbi turned
out to be a rendition of the
Beach Boys "Barbara Ann,"
except in the place of a beach
blonde from California was
"Barbanel," a Spanish
commentator of the Torah.
Schlock Rock has put out
seven albums on its own
Schlock Rock Inc. label and
has just finished shooting a
music video.
The Schlockers got
together after Solomon spent
a few years on the Orthodox
youth group circuit, playing
to shabbatons and other spe-
cial events. In 1987, Schlock
Rock put out its first album
and began touring. It has not
stopped since.
The group, which has a

road crew of four, plays up to
100 shows a year at summer
camps, synagogues, b'nai
mitzvot and weddings. The
Schlockers have toured the
United States, Canada,
Australia, South Africa and
Israel.
Other members of Schlock
Rock are Gary Wallin
(drums), Yonah Lloyd
(guitar), Danny Block (saxo-
phone), Mark Infield (saxo-
phone) and Mark Skier
(bass).
Despite all the touring,
group members do not live
like the rich and famous.
"Nobody does it for a liv-
ing," Solomon said. The
group boasts a medical stu-
dent, a dental student and a
law student, a situation
which provoked Chaim
Katz, a local fan and a good
friend of Solomon's, to quip
"They're all taken care of on
the road."
What will happen when
these pre-professionals
graduate? Solomon says
they will have to be replac-
ed. Until then, Schlock Rock
expects to tour every
weekend, as it has for the
past three years.
Schlock Rock's repertoire
also includes some rap
songs. "Yo, yo, yo yarmul-
ke" is an original work
which encourages pride in
wearing a kippah.
In addition, Solomon sang
a rendition of the Elvis
Presley classic "All Shook
Up," complete with leather
biker's jacket and slicked
back hair. The difference
between the Schlocker's ver-
sion and the King's? The
Schlockers sang about shak-
ing the Sukkot lulav and
etrog.
Another of the Schlockers'
rap titles, "Wash This
Way," based on the Run
DMC-Aerosmith hit "Walk
This Way," reviews the
meaning and content of the
ritual washing before meals.
"Kids now know how to

wash their hands because
the blessing is in the song,"
Solomon said. For the
Schlockers, much of the sat-
isfaction of their work comes
when their younger fans
learn about Judaism from
the songs.
"Maybe they'll meet a
rabbi and ask them some-
thing about the song that
they didn't understand,"
Solomon said.
Of course, adapting Jewish
themes to rock music has
disturbed some rabbis.
"There are some rabbis
who have prohibited their
followers from going to see
us," explained Infield, the
group's saxophonist and
resident chazan. "There are
people who think yeshiva
kids shouldn't be listening to
rock 'n' roll."
"These are the same peo-
ple who won't listen to rock
'n' roll anyway," Solomon
said.
During their shows, dozens
in the audience get up to
dance. Some do the hora,
while others do the twist.
An appearance by Baruch
Springsteen, another
Solomon invention,
delighted the crowd. ❑
