At first, only Roman
Catholics were allowed to set-
tle in the province of Quebec.
"But that was before
General Wolf conquered the
city in 1759," he said, citing
the date of the battle of the
Plains of Abraham so
familiar to all Quebecois. It
was the battle — quick and
decisive — in which the
British finally defeated the
French.
But Rosenhek remembers it
for a less obvious reason.
"Reportedly the first Jews
that came to Quebec City
came with General Wolf and
the English fleet; they were
looking after the clothing and
supplies of the officers," he
said. "And they were the first
Jews allowed to stay in
Quebec."
Not long after they settled,
they began to gain rights. The
Jews of Quebec were given
voting rights over 150 years
ago. "And that's one of the
earliest in Canada,"
Rosenhek said.
In Old City are the colorful,
winding streets leading to
cote de la Frabique, where
there is a plaque that mark-
ed the home of Sigmund
Mohr, a Jewish resident who
set up the first phone service
in Quebec City and also
developed the phone lines
across the St. Lawrence River.
Also there was Morris
Pollack, an Eastern European
immigrant, who started with
a pack on his back and
became a real estate entre-
preneur and founder of
Pollack's Department Store,
the first big Jewish-owned
business. At La Valle Univer-
sity here, the Pollack Pavilion
is named in his honor, as is
Pollack Hall at the local high
school.
Like Pollack, other Jewish
residents have taken an ac-
tive part in the life of the ci-
ty, particularly its business.
Rosenhek and his wife retired
a year ago from Mannequin,
a well-known clothing store
they owned. And his son Felix
owns four specialty and
souvenir shops in the city.
One of them is Boutique
Feejo at No. 4 cote de la Fabri-
que, just down the street from
the Sigmund Mohr house. In-
side, tourists were admiring
the crafts made by native
Quebecois, and Felix and his
wife Joann were helping
customers select souvenirs.
After one customer had
selected a poster of scenic
Quebec City, Felix came over
to say he is always happy to
greet Jewish travelers.
"We've found that when
Jews are traveling, they like
to meet the Jewish natives,"
he continued. "And we're
delighted to welcome them." ❑
