''''""1 NEWS Shochet, Paper Both 'Retire' Miami (JTA) — Fred Shochet, publisher of the Jewish Floridian, has an- nounced his retirement as well as the closing of the paper, thus taking a 62-year piece of history into retire- ment with him. The Jewish Floridian published its final edition June 29. He said he was closing be- cause there was "no family heir apparent." Shochet became the Flori- dian's editor and publisher in 1939 upon the death of his father, J. Louis Shochet, who founded the paper in 1928. At one time, Shochet's group of publications ex- tended throughout Florida and included a newspaper in New Orleans Shochet plans to compile an archive based on the Floridian, put out an occa- sional newsletter about philanthropy, and pursue other publishing projects. The paper's closing leaves the Miami area with one Jewish weekly paper, the Miami Jewish Tribune. . East Germans, Israel Tourism Bonn (JTA) — With hard currency in their pockets for the first time, 16 million East Germans are able to vacation abroad, and at least one tour organizer has begun to promote Israel as a destination. Scuba Reisen of Stuttgart organized the first inspec- tion tour of Israel for East German journalists and tourism officials. Par- ticipants just returned from the week-long junket, after visiting every part of the country, including the Red Sea resort of Eilat. According to informed sources in Jerusalem, Israel is considering abolishing visa requirements for East Germans. Since July 2, Israelis have not needed visas to enter East Germany On that date too, the West German deutschmark became the of- ficial currency.
