Richard D. Heideman
has announced his
candidacy for president of
B'nai B'rith International.
Heideman, internatlional
vice president of B'nai
B'rith, will run against Kent
E. Schiner, a former senior
international vice president.
The election will be held
Aug. 29 at the B'nai B'rith's
International Convention in
Dallas, Texas.
B'nai B'rith Interna-
tional's president, Seymour
D. Reich, has led the world's
largest Jewish organization
for two terms (four years) —
the maximum length a pres-
ident can serve.
Heideman, a 1965
graduate of Mumford High
School, was elected interna-
tional president of B'nai
B'rith Youth Organization
in 1964.
Since his years with
BBYO, Heideman has held
more than 20 positions with
B'nai B'rith International,
including past president of
B'nai B'rith District Two
(Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio,
Missouri, Kansas, Colorado,
New Mexico and Wyoming);
member of the B'nai B'rith
International financial
management and research
and planning committees
and the chairman of public
affairs/political action net-
work of B'nai B'rith.
Heideman left Detroit
after graduating from the
University of Michigan in
1969 to attend law school in
Washington, D.C. He is a
senior partner at Heideman
Cardin, P.C., a Washington
law firm he founded in 1973.
The firm also has offices in
Kentucky, Maryland and
Indiana.
A member of Kesher
Israel, an Orthodox syn-
agogue in Georgetown,
Heideman said that he is
prepared to assist in resolv-
ing the issues facing B'nai
B'rith International.
"The actual paid member-
ship has declined for many
years," Heideman said.
"The median age of mem-
bers focuses upon our senior
citizens. We must bring in
young people to properly re-
juvenate the organization."
Heideman would hold
fewer business meetings and
more action-oriented pro-
grams, focusing on public af-
fairs and issues of concern to
American Jewry.

Richard D. Heideman:
Seeking top spot.

"In addition, I believe we
should establish within our
current structure a B'nai
B'rith singles network, a
B'nai B'rith family issues
network; a B'nai B'rith
senior citizens network and
other networks focusing on
health care and financial
planning to supplement our
currently established B'nai
B'rith public affairs net-
work," Heideman said.
"To me, it means finding
each person's hot button and
providing for them on a
global scale the opportunity
to network with other like-
minded Jewish people."
B'nai B'rith International
must also deal with the
challenge of meeting the
budgetary requirements to
expand its services, accor-
ding to Heideman.
"The financial manage-
ment committee of B'nai
B'rith has recommended
consideration be given to a
dues increase at the upcom=
ing international conven-
tion," Heideman said. "I
believe in a balanced budget,
in a stand-still budget, and
that B'nai B'rith must
operate under a business
plan, marketing plan and fi-
nancial managing plan.
"Moreover, B'nai B'rith
has significant opportunities
because of the strength
through our numbers to
supplement our current
budget with income sources
other than increasing dues.
For example, an expanded
B'nai B'rith tours' program
could be initiated to focus
upon serving the Jewish
singles community, which
could both increase revenues
and provide a meaningful
service. The B'nai B'rith
corporate giving program
could be expanded, and gifts
to B'nai B'rith Foundation
increased through tele-
