Professor Arye Weinreb of Bar-Ilan University demonstrates the
revolutionary CYTOSCAN, an instrument developed at Bar-Ilan to detect
and pinpoint cancerous growth with a high degree of accuracy.
Beating Swords
Into Detectors
NECHEMIA MEYERS
Special to The Jewish News
T
he Prophet Isaiah's
vision of swords being
beaten into plowshares
may soon be realized by Israel
Aircraft Industries (IAI), the
country's largest defense
contractor.
Though by no means plan-
ning to forego the manufac-
ture of military wherewithal,
IAI is putting ever more em-
phasis on the development of
high-tech civilian projects,
one of which, unveiled earlier
this month, is likely to be a
major dollar-earner.
It is the Cytoscan, a device
which appears to be capable
of detecting the most common
types of cancer from a pa-
tient's blood sample in less
than an hour, and then deter-
mining the type and location
of the cancer.
Israel Aircraft Industries
scientists didn't invent the
machine, which was
developed by Israeli resear-
chers on the basis of prin-
ciples first set forth in British
laboratories. But IAI provid-
ed the knowhow required to
miniaturize and automate
the device and will be
manufacturing it.
As a result, IAI stands to
enjoy a significant part of the
profits from Cytoscan sales,
which — since the company
expects to sell 100 of the
machines at $175,000 each
during the coming year — are
likely to be substantial.
While IAI has always
marketed some civilian pro-
ducts, including a line of well-
regarded executive jets, it was
the cancellation of the Lavi
fighter plane project in
August 1987 which convinced
the firm's management that
more emphasis needed to be
put on non-military goods.
lb be sure, they still account
for only a small proportion of
IAI sales, which last year
totaled $1.06-billion. Among
its best-selling military pro-
ducts — two-thirds of them ex-
ported — are missiles and
pilotless planes. Next year
IAI also hopes to be
marketing some of the in-
novative avionic and elec-
tronic devices that were to
have been part of the Lavi.
Though Israel Aircraft In-
dustries is by far the coun-
try's largest defense contrac-
tor, it is not the only major
one. Also important are the
Military Industries, which
mainly produce small arms,
armor plating and ammuni-
tion, and the Weapons
Development Authority,
which concentrates on
futuristic products to meet
the needs of the Israe:
Defense Forces in the decades
ahead.
Aside from the three
government-controlled in-
dustries, there are a number
of private firms heavily in-
volved in defense production.
They include Urdan, which
makes Israel's highly-rated
Merchava tank and Tadiran,
whose military communica-
tions systems are used by,
among others, the U.S. Army.
But whether government or
private, all those companies
will have to turn, in part, to
civilian products if they are to
stay in business. This is
because the Israel Defense
Forces has less money to
spend and overseas markets
are also drying up.
