as is Loren's office.
Among the treasures near
Loren's desk are framed and
tinted antique photos, pic-
tures of butterflies covered
with glitter, boxes of
crackers and an old cash
register on the floor, and
numerous old photo albums,
which Loren collects.
His favorite album is filled
with blue-tint pictures,
taken by an anonymous pho-
.. tographer traveling to
Europe during the 19th cen-
tury.
Loren's office also is home
to numerous catalogs and
letters from private collec-
tors — his two best sources
for rare art books, and un-
solicited pictures from pho-
tographers hoping to display
their works in the Book
Beat's gallery.
One of his most recent
displays showed 19th cen-
, tury travel images. Ten per-
cent of all sales went to a
group of nuns in Detroit who
teach adults to read.

focus on a photographer
whose name is unknown and
whose pictures almost dis- •
appeared forever. Taken in

the 1920s, the photos were
recently discovered in a
burned-down artist's studio.
It is the search for unusual
photographs and books —
not bringing in the dollars —
that keeps Loren at the Book
Beat.
"The fun is not in the
business," he says. "You
don't go into the book busi-
ness to make money.
"The fun is in the hunt and
being with people. I enjoy
people who are obsessive
about books, especially art
and photography. If they're
looking for something
specific, I'll go to all kinds of
lengths to help get that
book."
And to help with the or-
ganizing — when his
catalogs and letters become
overwhelming — Loren
turns to his mother.
"She helps out about half
the year," Loren says. "She
goes to Florida and the books
go to hell. She also
straightens out my desk." ❑
