Child's Kidney
Saves Father
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A kidney
from a 10-year-old boy who
died following a traffic acci-
dent was transplanted into
his 42-year-old father recent-
ly, it has been disclosed.
The youngster was injured
when he fell off a tractor on
the kibbutz where he was
living with his divorced
mother, and lay in a coma
for some days.
Both the boy's mother and
father remained at his bed-
side together.
When it became clear that
he had no chance of survival,
doctors at Beilinson Hospital
asked the parents to agree to
allow the use of the
youngster's kidneys and eye
cornea for transplant. They
did not know that the father
had been undergoing
dialysis treatment for mon-
ths and was in urgent need
of a kidney transplant.
The parents agreed, but
did not disclose that the
father was a potential reci-
pient.
Only when friends inform-
ed the doctors of the father's
condition did the physicians
press him to accept the
transplant, as his son's
kidney was a perfect match
for him.
The father at first refused,
but was finally persuaded to
agree. He left the hospital
following the successful
transplant, remarking sad-
ly, "I am alive, but in
sorrow. I live, but have no
son."
Self-Sufficiency
Is JDC Goal
Jerusalem (JTA) — Train-
ing Soviet Jews to develop
their own Jewish commun-
ity life will be the guiding
principle of the Joint
Distribution Committee's
work in the Soviet Union for
the near future, according to
JDC director Michael
Schneider.
Schneider said that the
JDC "will be helping Soviet
Jews reach greater self-
sufficiency by training re-
, ligious and communal func-
tionaries, and by holding ex-
periments in income-making
projects."
There is now a widely
shared Jewish agenda for
Soviet Jews, Schneider said,
"with aliyah as the number
one priority. No one wants to
do anything to hamper this.
But even with a massive
aliyah, there will still be a
residual Jewish population
that has no Jewish knowl-
edge or communal in-
frastructure."
