THE CITY OF SOUTHFIELD AND

THE NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECT

Invite You To An

began as a result of the
Vietnam war and the
counter-cultural movement
of the '60s and grew in the
'70s and '80s as young Jews
began to search for a more
spiritually satisfying way of
life.
"American Jews are a very
successful flourishing group,
but many have not
flourished in the spiritual
world," said Rabbi Marc
Angel of the Spanish-
Portuguese Synagogue in
New York, who was elected
last week as the first
Sephardic Jewish president
of the RCA. "There is a
sense of rootlessness. They
want to find out where they
come from."
And modern Orthodoxy is
an attractive option, says
Freundel. "It took 40 or 50
years to develop an Ameri-
can style of Orthodoxy. Or-
thodox leaders were all Eu-
ropean and very traditional
before," said Freundel. "But
Orthodox Judaism has now
put on American clothes."
No doubt, upholding tradi-
tional Jewish law and obser-
vance in 20th and 21st cen-
tury America is and will not
be an easy task. But the
rabbis stress that Halachah
is not static and rigid.
"Halachah is not one
thing. There is a diversity of
opinions within Halachah,"
said Angel. "We believe the
Halachah is eternal, but it
also must meet the needs of
the time."
Bienenfeld agreed.
"Halachah must be con-
stantly undated and con-
tinually fine-tuned," he said.
"For we are in the business
of making something old and
archaic meaningful."

El Al Flights
Via Finns OK'd

New York (JTA) —
Finland announced July 3
that it will permit El Al
Airlines to begin flying
Soviet Jewish immigrants to
Israel from Finnish ter-
ritory.
Christer Hagulund, the
press attache at Finland's
Consulate here, said an El
Al plane will be permitted to
fly emigres once a week from
the eastern city of Lap-
peenranta to Israel. He said
Finland had committed to
the flights until Oct. 24.
Finland has already been
used as a transit point for
emigrating Soviet Jews in
the past several months, but
on a relatively small scale.
