THE UNBEATABLE DEALER

10 FRIDAY, JULY 13, 1990

The convention resolved
that it would present a
resolution at the B'nai
B'rith International conven-
tion in Dallas at the end of
August that, like the
AJCongress measure, would
call for a review of the case
before "appropriate
tribunals."
Robert Lifton, national
president of AJCongress,
said the resolutions repre-
sent a general belief in the
Jewish community that
questions over the severity
of Pollard's sentence will not
go away.
"There is a lingering doubt
in the Jewish community
that is not healthy," Lifton
said. "We're not saying
(Dershowitz) has proved his
case. But he presented
enough material to say it's
worth looking into."
The AJCongress resolu-
tion was based on guidelines
established by the ad hoc
committee on the Pollards of
the National Jewish Com-
munity Relations Advisory
Council. The umbrella group
said it "supports the call for
full, open and fair hearings
before appropriate tribunals
on these issues."
The ad hoc committee is
composed of representatives
of the American Jewish
Committee, Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith, Conference of Presi-
dents of Major American
Jewish Organizations and
the Jewish community rela-
tions councils of New York
and Philadelphia.
There has been ceaseless
pressure on the American
Jewish community from a
vocal and tireless cadre of
supporters, led by Pollard's
family, to advocate for the
Pollards in a more open
manner.
In fact, it was lobbying by
grass-roots Pollard sup-
porters on their local federa-
tions and chapters of nation-

al organizations that led to
the recent flurry of resolu-
tions.
Pollard's father said he
has personally traveled
throughout the country,
speaking to a number of
Jewish community federa-
tions and community rela-
tions councils, as well as
lobbying national organiza-
tions.
In recent months, open
sympathy from the Jewish
community for the Pollard
cause has often been ex-
pressed by reaching out to
Anne Pollard.
Since her release from
prison, Pollard has been in-
vited to address audiences as
a guest speaker at AMIT
Women and the Women's
Council of Young Israel.
Emunah Women presented
her with its Women of Valor
Award at a luncheon that
also honored a U.S. con-
gressman, Rep. Charles
Schumer (D-N.Y.)
Ironically, as sympathy for
the Pollards has grown since
Anne's release, discord bet-
ween her family and
Jonathan's has grown worse.

Morris Pollard said the
falling-out occurred when he
refused to let Anne's father,
Bernard Henderson, who
works in public relations,
coordinate the efforts to free
Jonathan from prison. In-
stead, he put the task in the
hands of his son's attorneys.
Henderson "insisted on be-
ing in charge of the whole
operation of getting Jay out
of prison," the elder Pollard
said, referring to his son by
his middle name.
Henderson acknowledged
he has not been in contact
with the Pollard family and
that Anne has not written or
visited her husband. But he
pointed out that Jonathan
had not telephoned his wife
from prison, either.

Yassir Arafat's call for a state
of Palestine existing
alongside and at peace with
Israel. We unanimously sup-
port this position.
Many of us years ago urged
Palestinians to adopt a two-

once the PLO did this, both
Israel and the United States
would respond with peace
gestures of their own.

in return. The Israeli govern-
ment has been intransigent.
Though many independent
investigating teams, in-
cluding Amnesty Interna-
tional and even our own State
Department, have determin-
ed that gross violations of
human rights exist in the oc-
cupied territories, the United
States has continued to give
aid to Israel as if it were not
a privilege but Israel's ab-
solute right.
