Marla Silverman and Susan Kaufman in Aspen's shopping district.

for the day to have a change
of scenery," Bob Schechter
says.
Schechter takes a yearly
trip to Aspen with the guys,
and his wife, who matches his
enthusiasm and skill, tries to
take a yearly trip with the
ladies. They both love skiing
with their children. Says their
son, Mark, 23, "We like being
with all the family friends,
and it's great being able to ski
and get a tan at the same
time." Adds his mom, "We've
gotten to know people from
Detroit on these trips that we
didn't know before."
For those who want a day off
from the slopes, Aspen offers
shops and boutiques. "You
don't have to ski to enjoy
Aspen," says yearly visitor
Sheila Fenton. "I love the at-
mosphere and the shopping is
great. We love to go to the
galleries and see all the art
work."
Not knowing anyone was no
barrier to Michigan State
University graduate Marla
Silverman, who moved to

Aspen for a year last October.
"It was a whirlwind decision,"
Silverman says. "I had been
there on vacation and I
wanted to take a year and try
something new before I
started a teaching career. The
first six months I stayed with
a family and traded 20 hours

a week of child care for room
and board and a ski pass. I
also work at a T-shirt store.
My sister is coming for the
summer and we will share an
apartment."
Though she enjoyed having
world-class skiing in her back-
yard, Silverman is looking for-
ward to hiking and mountain
biking this summer and may
take advantage of more
adventurous activities such as
white water rafting and hot
air ballooning.
