And certainly the big togetherness played a heavy role. But few kidded themselves . . . or each other . . . Nobody likes to lose . . . much less the 104 guys who teed off in the recent 8th Annual Michigan B'nai B'rith Golf Classic at Tam O'Shanter Country Club. They drove with fluid and oomph, chose clubs wisely and unwisely, kneeled to measure putts and even swore when missing or not getting off a good shot. Heck, the fellows wouldn't be human if they didn't .. . but in the end, when the golf- ing day was over, smiles were restored and laughter abounded again at the even- ing cocktail hour and dinner attended by about 150. So many prizes raffled, so many auctioned off . . . But the biggest came in the knowledge that they were raising funds for one of their pet projects . . . the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO) . . . How's a whopping $18,000 give or take for the day? . . . Not a bad haul for the tee-timers . . . not bad at all. Asked how he golfed, Doug Schubot replied, "It sure was a beautiful day" . . . Doug and Sydell will host and hostess a Michigan Cancer Founda- tion's Circle of Fellows shin- dig at their Schubot Jewelers in Troy, Sept. 22. Not a bad way to spend their 13th anniversary, felt sportscaster Don Shane and wife Mona . . . raising money for an excellent cause. This is the first year that the evening dinner was open to women . . . A few with wives were scattered around . . . Many others moaned about not being able to tell the off-color joke they had just heard. Beau Jack's Gary Cochran, honorary co-chairman with dad Jack Cochran, always smiling and cooperative .. . Steve Carlin telling about his nine cars in storage, in- cluding a 1935 LaSalle .. . Marty Feldman, Myron Milgrom, Kal Soskin, Dr. Abe Pearlman, Seymour Brode, Ben Tapper. Barrister Jerry Portney a celebrity since appearing with his client on the Oprah Winfrey national television show and Kelly & Co. locally . . . He had won a child har- rassment case. B'nai B'rith Foundation and Council employees sold raffle tickets . . . and walked around showing some of the jewelry being auctioned .. . Bobbie Levine, director of the Michigan Regional Council, first woman to hold the post in 50-year history . . . Linda Berke, new Foundation direc- tor; Barbara Adler, Council administrative assistant; and Emily Rogow, Foundation ad- ministrative assistant. Chairman Ralph Miller and Co-Chairman Peter Perlman mighty proud of the turnout and rolling in of many dollars . . . Ralph Woronoff, new Council president, getting raffle off "on the right foot" by winning the evening's first prize, a 20" color television set . . . Irving Siegel taking pictures . . . He and Fritz Friclaon contributed much to the day and evening's success . . . Jeff Sherbow, Arnie Becker, Meyer Pearlman. Emily Rogow a true fund- raiser . . . buying an Agam painting in bidding against Ben Tapper . . . and selling it to him for an additional $25 into the B'nai B'rith coffers . . . Chip Iceberg doing an ex- cellent job as auctioneer. First place during the golf- ing day won by the foursome of Bruce Ingber, David Simon, Steve Solomon and Art Levin. The weather cooperated for a beautiful day and evening . . . Many of the gents couldn't get over the amount of gifts for raffling off and auctioning . . . Seems like a majority had winning tickets around the room . . . and already want to know when the 9th annual will be held . . . they've got a lot of people to bring. EVERYBODY TALKS about how good the delis are in Detroit . . . but everywhere they go, seems like New York- style is the thing. Now a couple of former Detroiters have done something about it . . . Yester- day was the opening of their Detroit Delicatessen on W. Sample Rd. in Margate, Florida. The motif has local street signs . . . menu sandwiches named after Detroit land- marks, Detroit theme decor, etc. The ex-gents from here- abouts behind the new Detroit Deli are one-time kosher caterer Harvey Bloom and son Jeff Bloom, a familiar counterman from this locale. They're mighty proud of their Detroit background .. . Detroit delicatessens are among the finest anywhere (they rank among the nation's top five.) CONGRATS . . . to Dr. Abe Pearlman and wife Sylvia .. . on their 50th anniversary .. . to Don and Mona Shane .. . on their 13th anniversary .. . to Bobbie Levine . . . on her birthday. THERE'S MUCH more to just Elwin Greenwald open- ing Elwin's Tu-Go on Lafayette and Sixth in Royal Oak sometime this August. He's highly knowledgeable in kosher foods and prepara- tion and is also looking for- ward to what he and cohort Dale Thayer call "upscale kosher cooking." Elwin started with Van Dyke Place as an assistant chef in 1981 and is presently its executive chef . . . He will soon leave Van Dyke Place. Elwin was bar mitzvah at Mishkan Israel Synagogue and while living at home kept kosher with his family. MOTOR CITY MUFFINS were recently served at the 1990 Michigan New Product breakfast buffet in Lansing . . . Sisters-in-law owners Joyce Sherman and Susan Borin received the 1990 Michigan New Products Award . . . with an eggless oat bran cherry muffin in the agricultural/edible category for small business. Their winning eggless cherry oat bran muffin car- ries the "Heart Healthy" logo . . . and is among over 50 Motor City Muffin varieties. New York has the apple muffin as their state muffin . . . Now Michigan has the Cherry Oat Bran Muffin. A BIT OF LAS VEGAS came to Hyatt Regency Dear- born recently and it wasn't gambling . . . "Knock Out At The Hyatt" had boxing in the Hubbard Ballroom . . . and hotel lobby weigh-ins. FOUR AREA students from Detroit, Oak Park, Southfield and Ann Arbor were recipients of $5,000 in scholarships yesterday when John Darakjian Jewelers held its second annual awards ceremony. Tuition vouchers for $2,000, $1,500, $1,000 and $500 went to Miriam Fisher, Southfield; Naomi Waters, Oak Park;
