"There has been a revival of
Jewish life in the past 20
years — but it has occurred
mostly in translation. I
think that's a flawed analy-
sis, and we need to build a
convincing rationale that
Hebrew is a way into Jewish
civilization."

Andrew Silow Carroll writes
for the Washington Jewish
Week.

UAHC Opens ‘

Leaders' School

New York (JTA) — Con-
flict between rabbis and
their congregational boards
naL, ,Fcome commonplace in
the Jewish communal world.
With this in mind, the Union
of American Hebrew Con-
gregations, the central body
of Reform Judaism, has es-
tablished a school for syn-
agog-lie leaders.
"Many people elected to
synagogue boards may have
a lot of talent but no tools,"
said Rabbi Lennard Thal of
Congregation Ner Timid in
Las Vegas, who has par-
ticipated in the program.
"They can be successful doc-
tors, lawyers, travel agents
or insurance agents without
ever having learned to
manage people. They may
not even know the technique
of running a meeting."
The school, the only na-
tional program for lay con-
gregation leaders in Jewish
life, uses workshops, semi-
nars, teaching manuals and
the skills of 60 volunteers to
show new and veteran syn-
agogue leaders how to im-
prove their communications
s-iiis and enhance planning
and budgeting effectiveness.
Last year, 1,250 board
members of Reform temples
throughout the United
States and Canada par-
ticipated in UAHC pro-
