quoting Psalms, Exodus,
Shakespeare, Job, or Mann,
he could repeat with exact
phrasing and interaction the
precise lines, verses, stanzas,
or paragraphs that he had in
mind. Dr. Freehof's wife of 56
years, Lillian Simon Freehof,
would unfailingly sit in mid-
congregation at services and
nod ever so slightly in ap-
proval as he quoted scripture
or literature verbatim. Lillian
Freehof was a talented author
of distinction in her own
right, publishing children's
literature drawn from Biblical
and religious sources. She
rarely missed a Thmple serv-
ice or event.
Solomon and Lillian Free-
hof did not have children of
their own but treated the
many children of the Sunday
School as part of a very large
extended family. I remember
receiving my first apple at a
Sukkot service in Rodef
Shalom from Lillian's hand at
a Saturday morning service.
In the long, fruitful, bright
years of Dr. Freehof's retire-
ment, Lillian and Solomon
were constant, inseparable
companions. In my recent in-
frequent trips back to Pitts-
burgh over the past decade, I
would see them walking to-
gether slowly, in stately
fashion, on the avenue near
their home which was within
a half-mile of lbmple.
The Freehofs were a perma-
nent part of the scene of dai-
ly life in Oakland, the
neighborhood of the univer-
sities and the Ibmple. In
February, the last time I was
in Oakland, I saw Solomon
and Lillian strolling very
slowly down North Craig
Street, chatting animatedly
to each other. Their pace was
that of a quiet sightseeing
tour. The feeling was that of
dignity, peace, a reflection
upon intimte truths. When
they turned and moved with
quiet, slow steps toward
home, their journey seemed
near completion. 0
