Rift Develops
Over Shechita

London (JTA) — A major
rift has developed in the
Jewish community of
Britain over new legislation
some leading Orthodox
rabbis say will effectively
outlaw kosher meat in the
country.
The legislation, introduced
late last month in Parlia-
ment, has nevertheless been
approved by Britain's chief
rabbi, Lord Immanuel
Jakobovits, himself a mem-
ber of the House of Lords.
Other Orthodox rabbis are
bitterly opposed to the
legislation and are seeking
to overturn it.
The new laws place re-
strictions on shechita, the
kosher slaughter of animals.
According to the new law, an
upright holding pen will be
required to hold the animal
during slaughter. Many re-
ligious authorities believe
the restriction may render
the meat unkosher.
At a meeting of the British
Board of Jewish Deputies,
the Federation of Syn-
agogues, Britain's second
largest synagogue group,
asked the board to inform
the government that the
Jewish community is deeply
divided over the require-
ment.
A meeting of the Rab-
binical Council of Indepen-
dent Orthodox Jewish
Communities, which repre-
sents Chasidic groups, said
the new law would deprive
"thousands of Jewish
families of meat and meat
products." They criticized
the chief rabbi for
"misleading the public and
misinforming the govern-
ment."
Rabbi Jakobovits issued a
statement saying the pen
had long been accepted in
America, and that a group of
British rabbis who met in
1986 accepted the new law
as laid down in outline form.
Dayan Yaacov Lichtens-
tein, head of the Federation
of Synagogue's beth din,
rabbinical court, disagreed.
He said the proposed pen
would differ from the Ameri-
can one, which has a hydrau-
lic lift to raise the animal,
without which the shechita
is invalid.
Lichtenstein said the
legislation gave too much
discretion to the agriculture
minister, and that as cur-
rently worded, could be used
to prevent slaughterers from
cutting the animal's
esophagus and trachea, an
essential part of shechita.
