turn to the export market to
survive.
While Weiner admits the
local market is tempting as it
is expanding, in both dollar
and volume terms, his facili-
ty will also initially be satis-
fying a surge in demand for
mineral water in Europe and
the U.S. He contends
therefore that by restricting
the number of local producers
in any given field the
Ministry of Industry and
Trade is limiting the coun-
try's export potential.
Welner's group is involved
in yet another project to
establish an industrial enter-
prise in Katzrin in the Golan
Heights.
The $1.6 million "Approved
Enterprise" factory will pro-
duce non-cholesterol imita-
tion cheese made from soy-
beans called "Soya Kaas."
The Israeli company will im-
port the finished product from
Swan Gardens Ltd. in Atlan-
ta, Georgia, and market it
to local supermarket chains.
After sufficient marketing
research and feedback is ob-
tained it will import the
technology to manufacture
the product for export.
"The art of export isn't
gleaned overnight," avers
Weiner. "New firms have to
be given the chance to ply
their trade in the local
market, to hone their packag-
ing, to develop, the sales ex-
pertise, and to perfect the pro-
duct before they can attempt
to conquer export markets.
Our government should be
more interested in nurturing
young companies so they can
blossom into profitable and
successful exporters, rather
than in restricting market ac-
cess and creating monopo-
listic environments." ❑
