Palmer is one of 13 youngsters heading to Detroit this week for a seven-week project with the New York-based AJSS, which since 1950 has recruited youngsters from around the country to vol- unteer at work-camp sites throughout the United States and Israel. The Society, which con- ducts two or three voluntary work service camps each summer, selects projects, recruits and screens the teens. "I wanted to do something with a purpose," Palmer said. "This was the perfect thing." In Detroit, the teens will help revitalize the Mack- Outer Drive area for the Neighborhood East Area Residents Community Organization, a non-proift community group created in 1976 to rehabilitate a de- teriorating neighborhood. Detroit is one of two cities hosting AJSS students from New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland and Florida. A se- cond group of teens will join a work program in Delaware. As the host organization, NEAR will supply housing, technical supervision, tools, building materials and transportation in the Detroit area. Assisting NEAR are the Jewish Community Council and the Catholic Youth Organization. Participants pay for their own transportation and con- tribute $1,000 to help defray costs of food, housing and extracurricular activities. "Volunteers are a precious commodity, but when young people pay for the experience and put their beliefs into ac- tion to help others, it is truly special," said Michael Chateau, the volunteer chief executive officer for NEAR. NEAR has tackled several projects in the last two years. Among them were Operation Crack Down, which increased community awareness of substance abuse while mobilizing vol- unteers to effectively close down crack houses; Auto Theft Prevention, which provided a comprehensive public awareness and repor- ting approach for the issue; and Crime Prevention Pro- ject, that provided informa- tion to people at the grass- roots level, involving them in such self-help programs like Neighborhood Watch. - In the past, work camp volunteers have constructed additional facilities at an interracial camp for under- privileged children, erected homes in a self-help housing project, built classrooms for an outdoor educational center and constructed an overnight shelter in a state forest. The out-of-state volunteers will work with NEAR five days a week, when they will rehabilitate a house found in a 192-block area comprising 6,500 homes and businesses on Detroit's east side. They also will clear the ground to construct two softball diamonds. Estimates show that near- ly 60 percent of the area is black, 20 percent is below poverty level and 15 percent of its adult population is unemployed. Homes are priced between $2,000 and $50,000. "I spend a lot of time worrying all-year round 'Volunteers are a precious commodity, but when young people pay for the experience and put their beliefs into action to help others, it is truly special. Michael Chateau about my grades and my problems. I have so much time in the summer that I think I should spend it doing something for someone else," said Jessica Godoff, a Chevy Chase, Md., teen who will spend the summer in Detroit for the program. The youngsters will be housed in an old Lutheran school in Detroit, where they will eat, sleep, hear speakers and participate in educa- tional and religious pro- grams. In addition, they will prepare Shabbat services, tour the Detroit area and travel on some weekends to nearby cities like Toronto. AJSS camp directors Mar- ty and Rochelle Kopelowitz, both New York educators, have volunteered their summers with the program for 18 years. They will work with the youngsters in Detroit. "It is just a passion we have," Marty Kopelowitz said. "The response from the Jewish community is outstanding. We want the children to understand that this is the Jewish concept of tzedakah." ❑
