Young Adults
Join Otzma

Nine Detroit-area young
adults are planning a
10-month stay in Israel as
participants in Project Otzma
(Strength).
Coordinated by the Council
of Jewish Federations, Otzma
is a program consisting of
a nearly a year of work and
study in Israel and a commit-
ment to service in one's home
Jewish community. Co-
sponsoring organizations in-
clude the United Jewish Ap-
peal, Jewish Agency, Israeli
Forum and World Zionist
Organization. The Jewish
Welfare Federation is the
local sponsor.
Local participants include:
Andrea Polk, Beth
Katkowsky, Debbie Wasser-
man, Deborah Lebold, Debra
Solomon, Jeff Levin, Nancy
Fink, Robert Kalman and
Wendy Goldstein.
Aimed at persons age 18-24,
the Otzma program includes
intensive language study,
work, social and cultural ac-
-
tivities at a kibbutz ulpan;
tutoring pupils in Youth
Aliyah villages, agricultural
work on a moshav and public
service in one of Detroit's Pro-
ject Renewal sister cities,
Ramle or Yavne.
Otzmaniks are "adopted"
by an Israeli family connected
to the Israeli Forum, a group
of successful professionals
and business people who
work closely with Americans
on special projects. The Israeli
family will provide the
American student with a
0 home-away-from-home, offer-
ing guidance as well as a
place to go on vacations and
holidays.
Twenty-seven Detroiters
have participated in Otzma
since its inception in 1986.
Nine of them currently serve
the Jewish community here
or in Israel.
