BACKGROUND: Sid Bolkosky was born
and raised in Rochester, N.Y. His father,
Gus, was a junk dealer, while his
mother, Freda, was a city employee.
Bolkosky says two things stand out
from his childhood: His close friendship
with his wife and his involvement in
music. He met his wife in nursery
school. They were friendly in high
school and dated in college. His musical
interests began with the piano and then
the vibes (vibraphone). In high school
he played in a jazz band with Chuck
Mangione. Some of Bolkosky's teenage
accompanists are now part of
Mangione's quartet. "Music became an
important part of my life," he says.
After he graduated from Franklin
High School in Rochester, he attended
the University of Buffalo. He soon
transferred to the University of
Rochester because of a vascular disease,
portal-hypertension, that required an
operation and recuperation.
He was going to study medicine, but
after discussions with his surgeon, Dr.
Seymour Schwartz, he chose history.
After reading a book on Eichmann,
he was overwhelmed with questions
about German Jews. This motivated
him to write his Ph.D. dissertation on
German Jews. In 1975, his research was
the basis of the book The Distorted
Image: German Jewish Perceptions of
Germans and Germany.
From 1969-1972, he taught at
Hobart and William Smith colleges, in
Geneva, N.Y. There he met a colleague,
Marvin Bran, who had a tremendous
impact on his life. Bran gave Bolkosky's
daughter a viola for her third birthday.
She began playing the violin soon after.
"This quite literally changed our lives.
Our lives are involved with music and
our children," says Bolkosky. Today, his
children both study music with
aspirations of professional careers.
In his history classes, Bolkosky has
students study musical scores as
language systems.
Since 1981, he has directed interview:
of 165 Holocaust survivors. He conducted
70 interviews himself and has trained
interviewers. He began this project with
the late Dr. John Mames at the
Holocaust Memorial Center and has
expanded it into a project at the
University of Michigan-Dearborn.
While on sabbatical in 1986, he co-
authored A Holocaust Curriculum: Life
Unworthy of Life, a complete guide for
high school students and teachers. ❑
