• Since 1939 Au."‘ INN "What I've learned over the years is you don't get an agent until you've got some productions under your belt," she adds. Albee's agent replied that although he liked her play, he wasn't interested in represen- ting her at the time. Dubin packed up her aspirations and put them on the shelf. There followed an 11-year intermission between Dubin's plays. She obtained her master's degree in English and taught at Oakland Com- munity College. Then her in- terests shifted toward psychology, and she earned a second master's degree, in counseling, at Oakland University. She opened a private counseling practice and had a child, Nick, 13. In 1982, the curtain finally rose on Act II of "Kitty Dubin, Playwright." A helpful push from time, as well as a little shove from some spousal rivalry, got the theatrical ac- tion going again. "How many more decades are going to pass before you do this?" Dubin chided herself. Then, her husband, Larry Dubin, a professor at the University of Detroit Law School, started writing and publishing articles on legal topics. "What is he doing writing?" Dubin responded. "I should be writing. I'm the writer in this family." Within a matter of months, Dubin had three magazine pieces published, including one in Family Circle that net- ted her 15 talk-show ap- pearances. Encouraged, she wrote a new play, and then another, Mirrors, which was produced at the State Fair Theater in 1986. Dubin's coup led to deepen- ed commitment. Returning to Wayne State, she took a year- long playwriting class where she wrote The Last Resort and refined her craft. Bringing a play from con- ception to production takes more than an inspired flick of the Bic. "The whole thing, if it's fast, takes two years," Dubin says. The road from first draft to opening night is paved with many risks. But, discussing her art, Dubin sounds quiet- ly confident and happy to have reached the point of tak- ing herself seriously. She says she's excited about a current project, The Ties That Bind, her fifth play, and gratified by the success she's achieved thus far. "Most playwrights do not get productions in their lifetimes. They get a reading," Dubin says. "I feel I've been very fortunate." ❑ 871-1590 7618 Woodward Ave. SPECIAL QUALITY PARTIES UP TO 200 Specializing In: Bar Mitzvahs, Sweet 16's, Showers, Anniversaries, Retirement Parties, Birthdays, Weddings, Etc.
