Washington (JTA) — A
number of Jewish groups are
applauding the Supreme
Court's decision Monday to
let stand an appellate court
ruling barring the place-
ment of a menorah in a
public park in Burlington,
Vt.
The high court refused to
hear the city of Burlington's
appeal of a lower court rul-
ing that the city should not
have allowed the Chasidic
movement to place the 16-
foot menorah in a public
park.
But Nathan Lewin, the
Washington attorney who
represents Chabad, said the
Hasidic movement was
stressing an important prin-
ciple in placing menorahs on
public land during Chanu-
kah.
This is to let Jewish
residents know that "the
city respects their faith no
less than it does the majority
faith," Lewin said.

Strenghten Ties
Bonn (JTA) — A 20-year
covert relationship between
the Palestine Liberation
Organization and the Stasi,
the East German security
police under the old Com-
munist regime, was even
stronger than previously
believed, according to a
former high- ranking Stasi
official, quoted recently in
Die Welt.
According to the unnamed
official, the PLO turned fre-
quently to the Stasi for
training and assistance in
operations against Israel,
and the operations were
often coordinated with
Stasi's Soviet counterpart,
the KGB.
In that period, PLO leader
Yassir Arafat personally
asked the Stasi to train
fighters for attacks on Israel.
Erich Honecker, the
deposed former Communist
leader, had personally
issued guidelines on how to
deal with the PLO, the Stasi
official said.
