But those are not the only reasons Jews voted for the Salvation Front. They told the JTA that Iliescu gave them a sense of stability. They also said living stan- dards have already improv- ed, though they would be below the poverty line in Western countries. Jews were also acutely sensitive to the personality differences between Iliescu and his rival, Ion Ratiu, the 72- year-old businessman who heads the Peasant Par- ty. Iliescu, a short, squat man, campaigned in his shirt sleeves and seemed to most Romanians, including the country's 20,000 acknowl- edged Jews, to be a guar- antee against unknown and possibly dangerous political adventures. Ratiu, who lived the last 50 years in Britain, where he made a fortune in shipp- ing, speaks with a faint British accent and in- variably appeared in a silk suit and polka-dot bow tie. He was a living caricature of the prewar landed aristoc- racy, which was the cradle of Romanian anti-Semitism. Chief Rabbi Rosen has been the undisputed leader of Romanian Jews for the past 45 years. He obtained exit visas for a half- million of them who settled in Israel. Although he was forced to deal with Ceausescu, Rosen remains a political and moral force in the country. As the minister for religious affairs, Nicolae Stoicescu, put it, Rosen is "the man with whom we want to deal." ❑ DETRO IT' ver two 1990 90. o Nugust 19 f or thousand young DetrOtt Jewish in Maccab Centes' athletes Will dye in Youth C , the Jewish orornunity ins with . anbeg en North '.m Game6".
