SEIZE THE
Sterling Advantage ...

The greater the privilege, the
larger the obligation. It mat-
ters not whether the privilege
is leadership, wealth, educa-
tion or talent. The Talmud
says that with the righteous,
God is more exacting and
demanding.
This truth has application
to our own time. We tend to
view with dismay and alarm
the lawlessness of the under-
privileged. We are sickened
by the gangs of the slums who
terrorize streets in the major
cities of this country.
And yet, upon reflection, we
can understand that broken
homes, poverty and a corrupt
environment stimulate these
acts of lawlessness. But what
about those on the upper level
of the educational, social and
economic ranges of our coun-
try? Many who enjoy life's
privileges and security
demonstrate carelessness, ir-
responsibility and
wastefulness. Worse yet, we
see how people who occupy
positions of trust and respon-
sibility in business, finance,
government, and even the in-
stitution of religion, violate
that trust and commit acts
that dishonor their positions.
Is not their transgression
greater, precisely because of
the exalted station they
occupy?
It is not difficult to criticize
others; it is much more dif-
ficult to criticize ourselves.
This thought would not be
complete were it not applied
to our own lives.

Being a Jew is a great
privilege. Our religious and
moral heritage confers upon
each of us the vision and faith
of all the centuries that have
preceded us. We, as Jews,
ought to set standards of in-
tegrity and moral excellence
for our world. In our relation-
ships, we should demonstrate
compassion. In our striving
for a better world, we should
seek the establishment of
justice. We ought to express to
our children and grand-
children love and devotion for
our way of life. The great
privilege of being a Jew
should be matched by a sense
of duty and obligation to the
advancement and enrichment
of that tradition that informs
our lives. We are to be judged
by standards different than
those that obtain for other
people.
Moses enjoyed the extraor-
dinary privilege of being
God's spokesman. When he
gave way to impatience and
faithlessness, he violated the
standards of his high office
and was disbarred from the
land of promise. Let all who
enjoy great privilege be cogni-
zant of this truth. ❑
