Since no demonstrations
are allowed in the Knesset,
the placards were torn up
and guards turned the dem-
onstrators over to the police.
But the lawmakers are not
unaware of the groundswell
of sentiment for reform.
Four Knesset members
from four different parties
have introduced bills calling
for direct election of the
prime minister. All of them
passed their first reading in
the plenum last month and
are now before the Knesset
Law Committee for further
action.

Di d Arafat
Send Warning?

Tel Aviv (JTA) —
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization leader Yassir Arafat
could be seeking to ally
himself with Israel against
hard-line elements in the
PLO, if a story in Ha'aretz is
correct.
The newspaper reported
Monday that Arafat sent a
frantic message to Israel re-
cently in which he warned of
the danger of an all-out war
in the Middle East and
offered his help to prevent it.
Ranking figures in
Stockholm said Arafat asked
Swedish Foreign Minister
Sten Andersson to relay the
message to Israel. Arafat
told Andersson that extreme
elements in the PLO are
taking over the organization
and are threatening to shunt
him aside, along with the
rest of its mainstream
leadership.
Israeli Labor Party leader
Shimon Peres, who met with
Andersson during the So-
cialist International session
in Cairo several weeks ago,
confirmed that he was told
this by the Swedish min-
ister. But Peres said it was
not presented to him as a
message from Arafat.

City's Police
Seek Vandals

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Jerusalem police are concen-
trating all available man-
power on a search for the
vandals who smashed 62
gravestones at the Jewish
cemetery on the Mount of
Olives last weekend.
The destruction, apparent-
ly by men using heavy
hammers, was discovered on
June 10. The Arab guard
who reported it was
promptly detained for ques-
tioning.
The Kollel Polin Burial
Society estimated the
damage at $100,000.
No graffiti was found at
the scene.
