Bernstein insisted that
there is serious concern, par-
ticularly in Washington,
that Israel may be
retreating from its proud
record of democracy. "The
policies of the Israeli
government are moving
away from democratic ideals
in its treatment of the Pales-
, tinians," he suggested, ad-
ding: "If we don't speak out,
Israel's enemies will."
The irony is that many
would consider Bernstein an
enemy of Israel for his
criticism. That is what
frightens him the most, he
says.
In a conversation several
days after his speech, when
told that many in the au-
dience felt his remarks were
too critical, he became upset.
"Why is it that if you're
critical of Israeli policies,
you're charged with beating
up on Israel? The Israelis
•
themselves do it all the
time." He mentioned that a
woman in the audience had
come up to him after his
speech and told him he was a
self-hating Jew.
Why do American Jews
feel they have to be more
hawkish than the Israelis?
he wondered.
He said American Jews
were doing a disservice to
Israel by refusing to deal
with the charges and, in-
stead, attacking the critics.
Bernstein asserted in his
speech that the fate of Israel,
and Jews, is "inextricably
linked to the truth," and
that it is the job of jour-
nalists to ferret out that
truth, no matter how painful
it maybe.
He credited the Israeli
press for its strong advocacy
role and for "helping to keep
the focus on the right
issues," noting that the
Israeli press has broken nu-
merous stories on alleged
violations of human rights
among the Palestinians.
It is true that the Israeli
press is far more active and
open about covering Israel,
warts and all, than the
American Jewish press.
Theirs is a healthy ap-
proach; ours is far more
defensive.
Whether or not one agrees
with Carl Bernstein, his is a
point of view that must be
acknowledged and discussed
on its merits. Lashing out at
him, rather than dealing
with the issues he raises, is
only proving his point: that
the legacy of the Nixon
White House lives on.
