Mobsters

Moe Dalitz

raise millions of dollars for
Israel. Joseph "Doc"
Stocker, a bootlegger
associate of Lansky and
Longy Zwillman, con-
tributed money to the
Agudat Yisrael religious
party in Israel. At a dinner
in 1970, Moe Dalitz, a
leading member of the
Cleveland crime syndicate
and one of the early owners
of the Desert Inn casino in
Las Vegas, received the Ci-
ty of Peace award of the
State of Israel, "in recogni-
tion of distinguished service
to the people and the State
of Israel:' The governor of

Nevada, United States
senators, court justices and
public officials attended the
event. And at the funeral of
Jake Guzik, Rabbi Noah
Ganze of the Chicago Circle
Synagogue eulogized him as
a man who never lost his
faith in God, who performed
many acts of charity and
who "made frequent and
vast contributions to my
congregation."
Other mobsters sought
respectability because of a
desire not to embarrass
their children and grand-
children and thus jeopardize
their chances for success in

the legitimate world.
Ruben, the Haganah
emissary, believes that Sam,
the Miami gangster,
assisted the Haganah for
just this reason.
"He had a daughter of
marriageable age, but she
had a difficult time meeting
Jewish boys because of what
her father was. I think he
helped us because it was a
way to gain acceptance in
the Jewish community.
Once it became known that
he was helping us, the
Jewish community's at-
titude toward him changed.
His daughter began dating

Jewish boys and eventually
married one."
Not every Jewish gangster
was so altruistic towards the
Jewish community or
Jewish interests. Some of
the same Jewish hoodlums
who claim to have defended
their neighborhood and
Jews against anti-Semites
got their start in crime by
preying on Jews. Mickey
Cohen, who boasted that he
"would do anything for a
cause that was right, par-
ticularly Jewish causes;"
and who said that "Jews
should behave differently
and more correctly,"
