Spain Awards Sephardic
Jewry Prestigious Prize

Madrid (JTA) — Spain is
awarding one of its most
prestigious prizes, the
Prince of Asturias Prize, to
world Sephardic Jewry, the
descendants of the Jews ex-
pelled from Spain 500 years
ago.
The award was announced
Friday by the Principality of
Asturias Foundation in the
northwest city of Oviedo,
near the Bay of Biscay.
The presentation is made
there annually by the Prince
of Asturias, the son of King
Juan Carlos and Queen
Sophia, who is accompanied
by his parents on the occa-
sion.
According to the founda-
tion, which was established
in Oviedo in 1980, the prize
is granted for solidarity, and
can be awarded to an in-
dividual, group or institu-
tion in any country of the
world.
While it recognizes efforts
to transcend national boun-
daries in the interests of the
brotherhood of man, it is also
awarded for struggles
against poverty, sickness or
ignorance, and to in-
dividuals or groups which
open new boundaries of
knowledge.
The decision to award the
prize to Sephardic Jewry,
whose expulsion from Spain
will be marked by a series of
national events in 1992, was
seen as an effort to renew the
Spanish dialogue with the
Jewish people and improve
relations with Israel.
Spanish radio and televi-
sion carried announcements
of the award. The Israeli
Embassy in Madrid and
Jewish community centers
all over the country were

soon flooded with con-
gratulatory telephone calls.
The prize consists of a
document, a distinctive
symbol in the form of a
sculpture by Joan Miro, and
5 million pesetas, the
equivalent of nearly
$50,000.
It was not immediately
known who will accept the
prize on behalf of the
Sephardic Jewish com-
munities worldwide.

'Love Fest'
In Greece

New York (JTA) — Con-
stantine Mitsotakis, the new
prime minister of Greece,
and American Jewish
leaders pledged their mutual
support here June 12 in a
meeting that could accu-
rately be described as a
"love fest."
But "it was a 'love feast'
we've waited eight years to
hold," exulted Abraham
Foxman, national director of
the Anti- Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith, who
enthusiastically embraced
the 71-year-old Mitsotakis
before Greek television
cameras.
Since 1981, relations bet-
ween Greece and the Jewish
world had been strained over
the often anti-Israel and an-
ti-U.S. policies of former
Prime Minister Andreas
Papandreou.
In sharp contrast, Mit-
sotakis, who heads the
center-right New Democracy
Party, established full dip-
lomatic relations with Israel
on May 21, less than two
months after taking office.
Mitsotakis has pledged to
tighten up security.

During the coming week Yeshiva Beth Yehudah will observe the yahrtzeits o f the following departed friends, with
the traditional memorial prayers, recitation of kaddish and studying of mish nayos.
