late 1940s were a time of
danger and terror for the
Jews of Europe and confu-
sion and uncertainty for the
Jews in the United States,
who were still close to their
immigrant origins. Al-
though the activities of
Jewish gangsters were an
embarrassment, they could
provide what respectable
Jews could not: physical pro-
tection for the community
and quick cash for an Israel

Washtenaw JCC
Hires Coordinator

Sharon Lapides, has been
hired as a youth coordinator
at the Jewish Community
Center of Washtenaw County.
Under her direction, the JCC
is organizing new expanded
grade-school programming
and a local delegation of
athletes to participate in the
Jewish Community Centers
North American Youth Mac-
cabi Games to be held in
Detroit in August.
Beginning in the fall,
Lapides also will be the head
teacher for the JCC's new In-
fantfIbddler Day Care Center.
She is a graduate of
Eastern Michigan Universi-
ty with a bachelor's degree in
physical education.
