Gregory Hines To Perform
At Fisher For Kaplan Institute

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

ne of the earrings he
wears in his left ear is
said to be a ' Mogen
David . . . Gregory Hine's wife,
Pamela Koslow, is a fine
Jewish artist.
When the actor and ex-
cellent dancer appears Sept. 8
for a one-nighter at the Fisher
Theatre . . . it won't be to star
in any musical for the House
of Nederlander . . . The perfor-
mance will be strictly on
behalf of the Friends of
Kaplan Medical Institute in
Israel . . . with volunteers put-
ting together a big fundraiser
for AIDS research.
Hines has no other Detroit
engagement scheduled . . . He
comes here following the
release of his latest movie,
with a backup of about 15
people.
Almost 50 persons showed
up at _Ginopolis' On The Grill
in Farmington Hills to help
work on the affair . . . which
is expected to be far and away
bigger and better than its two
predecessors.
Lou Golden (that's Louis H.)
had met Dr. Zvi Bentwich
here in the Detroit area .. .
and when Lou, a board of
governors member of Haifa
University, was in Israel, Dr.
Bentwich took him on a tour
of the Kaplan Medical Center,
including the wing of AIDS
patients from the world over.
Lou was so impressed by
strides being made on
research for prevention or cure
on very little money that he
came back to America with a
goal.
Lou had seen the patients
. . . and vowed to raise money
in fighting this sickness and
scourge of humanity.
His first fund-raiser was at
Somerset Mall . . . Last year it
was the Fisher Theater .. .
This year, getting the Fisher
on a Saturday night . . . and
Gregory Hines . . . were truly
big bonanzas . . . Expectations
are for a large sale of tickets
to fill most of the 1,900 seats.
Lou is honorary chairman
. . . Co-chairmen of the affair,
which will also have strolling
dinner by many fine
restaurants, are Steve Boch
and Bob Benson . . . Sandi
Cherrin is secretary and the
gal to call for tickets,
661-9931; and Doreen Benson,
treasurer . . . Vice-
chairpersons of the Gregory
Hines Concert for Friends of
Kaplan Medical Center are:
Mira Eisenberg, Jamie

Rabinowitz, Doreen and San-
di, Menashe Shemesh and Les
Lee Roland, the lass to call for
more info, 559-1144.
The Ginopolis' kickoff show-
ed a video clip of Hines perfor-
ming at the Sammy Davis, Jr.
TV tribute, dancing and kiss-
ing Sammy's feet.
Even the young came to
help . . . Little Joshua Cohen,
9-month-old son of Barbara
and Stan Cohen, escorted to
the meeting by his parents,
was heard from.
IF PEOPLE had any cares
in the world they certainly left
them elsewhere during recent
12th anniversary party by
Excalibur.

The Detroit Pistons had
beaten Portland and if folks
didn't know otherwise, they'd
have thought this was a big
victory celebration . . . Also
those having birthdays and
anniversaries that evening
never had more notable
festivity on their day.
People got to Excalibur
much before the 5 p.m. star-
ting time just to have places to
sit . . . Darlene Leader even
saw gals eating food in the
ladies' rest room . . . there was
no place to put their food.
Darlene and Marvin Leader
put on quite a show with their
excellent dance stylings . . . Al
Sherman reminiscing to 50
years ago to the Hazelwood
days . . . Vicki and Ray
Goldbaum proud of daughter,
Yael, stalwart evening hostess
at Excalibur . . . other
daughter, Rebecca, too, who is
on the verge of giving them
grandparent status . . . Harold
Haas looking good in booth
No. 1 . . . Ray (Shirley) and
Dave Abrams distinct un-
lookalikes . . . Restaurateurs
Nick Sorise (Nicky's), Vince
Passalacqua (Mario's), Jaye
Cooper (Ristorante de
Modesta) with high approval
of owner/chef Marty Wilk's
huge anniversary shindig .. .
Linda and Antonio Foglia,
everybody's favorites . . .
Marty in tux beaming from
ear to ear . . . John Cetrone off
duty from bartending duties
showing his newest gag fun,
the dancing Coke can.
Leah Baum smart-looking
in her mini cowboy hat . . . Art
Klein dancing the evening
away with zest . . . Yale
Simons with a lot of hellos .. .
Jean and Mitchell Newman
gracious friends . . . Mike
Selik never looking better .. .
Sue and Les Goldstein,
Nimrod Rosenthal, Jerry
Tobin, Bob Hersh, Leah
Marks, Florence Larame,

Estelle Cantor, Jose Reyes,
Yolande Jannett, Sandra and
Les Champian, Suzie Winton-
Feinberg, Michek Shapiro,
Reva Kogan and so many
many other revelers in the
good time had by all.
CONGRATS . . . to son
Scott and daughter-in-law
Bonnie Raskin . . . in
Alpharetta, Ga. . . . on their
sixth anniversary.

THE
PERFECT
GENTLEMAN host . . . This

was Brian Gussin, son of
Diane and the late Norman
Gussin, whose recent gradua-
tion brunch at Embassy
Suites brought out more of his
fine character . . . Brian cer-

Israel will benefit

performance.

tainly chose the correct field,
graduating from Michigan
State University in
psychology . . . and now to
Wayne State U. for his
master's in clinical psychology
. . . He is such a good young
man that patients or clients
will enjoy having some of
Brian rub off on them.

EUGENE APPLEBAUM,

head of Arbor Drugs, had
quite a fulfilling month of
May . . . Arbor Drugs was
selected as the Michigan Corn-
pany of the Year for 1989-90
by the Detroit Free Press (The
other finalists were DoW
Chemical, Gerber Foods, Kel-
ly Services and Inacomp Com-
puter Centers.) . . . It opened
store number 100 in St. Clair-
Shores . . . and Fortune
magazine listed Arbor Drugs
as one of the "Companies to
Watch."

Gene founded Arbor Drugs
27 years ago in Dearborn,
where his original store, still
called Civic Drugs, is still
located . . . and today not on-
ly has 3,200 employees but is
the nation's 22nd largest
drugstore chain.
How it got the name Arbor
Drugs? . . . When Gene
started the corporation, one of
the stores was, and still is,
named Arbor Drugs in Ann
Arbor . . . a nice short name
. . . and so the corporate title.
CONGRATS to Harriet and
Jack Goldberg of Stage & Co.
. . . on their 44th anniversary
. . . Recent breakfast honoring
six families who have $5,000
booths and $1,000 yearly
renewal fees for Children
