"Milles as Mentor: The
Work of Cranbrook Sculptors:
1931-1951," will be on view at
Cranbrook Art Museum
through Sept. 9.
"Milles as Mentor" in-
cludes many less-familiar
bronze, marble, plaster and
wood sculptures by the
Swedish master juxtaposed
with the work of several of his
Cranbrook students, col-
leagues and friends.
Work by artists such as
Duane Hanson, abny Rosen-
thal and Marshall Fredericks
will be included with the
work of Frances Rich, Carroll
Barnes, Svea Kline and
others who worked with
Milles.
Swedish sculptor Carl
Milles came to Cranbrook in
1931 as the head of the
sculpture department. His
sculptures and fountains are
integral elements in Eliel
Saarinen's overall design for
the Cranbrook Educational
Community. Cranbrook
Academy of Art Museum has
the largest collection of
Milles' sculpture in the
United States, second only to
Millesgarden, Milles' villa
and studio in Lidingo,
Sweden.
