n a world surrounded
in bitter conflicts, per-
haps a look into this
week's Torah portion could
help us put things in
perspective.
"God coined every human
being with the same coin of
Adam, yet not one person is
similar to his friend."
(Talmud, Tractate, Sanhedrin
37a). The Talmud continues
by saying that the purpose of
this design of creation is to
teach every individual that it
was worthwhile for God to
create the entire world for
him alone. Our sages explain-
ed that each person, while
generally fitting into a norm
described as humanity, has a
unique combination of mind,
spirit and emotions.
Once we understand the
blessing of multiplicity and

conflict, we must ask
ourselves what is the fine line
between bitter and needless
arguments that lead to war,
and positive intellectual
disputes that contribute to a
colorful, interesting and in-
novative life.
The Torah provides us with
a clue. "Vayikach Korach" —
Korach Took: the commen-
taries explain that Korach's
intention in his intellectual-
ly disguised claims was to
take for personal benefit
rather than give to his people.
Here lies the simple answer.
The difference is sincerity of
motivation. When one argues
a point, he must be sincere in
his argument and ready to
retreat his position when pro-
ven wrong. This task, as easy
as it sounds, is so very hard to
accomplish because at the
core of the matter is the most
difficult nut to crack:
selfishness, ego and
narrow-mindedness.
That is the reason our
sages, in Pirkei Avot (Ethics
of Our Fathers, chapter 5,
mishna 20), say that any
argument not spiritually
motivated will establish itself
permanently. If the root of the
problem is based on

selfishness and materialistic
gain, there is no hope for a
solution.
Every page in the Talmud is
inundated with differences of
opinion. The magnificence of
the Talmud is in the standard
of truth and accuracy and the
scholars' ability to accept a
convincing different point of
view and retract their own.
In spite of halachic con-
troversies throughout the
ages, the Jewish nation has
found Torah offers true solu-
tions. The creator of the
universe who designed a
plural world has provided in
his owner's manual — the
Torah — instructions on how
to deal with the side effects of
pluralism. 0

West Berlin Ends
Neo-Nazis' Ban

West Berlin (JTA) — A 20-
year ban on the neo-Nazi
National Democratic Party
(NPD) has been lifted in
West Berlin, apparently as a
consequence of the rush
toward unification of the two
Germanys.
A spokesman for the Fren-
ch mission confirmed recent-
ly that the Allied powers for
the first time since 1969
have not renewed the
longstanding restrictions on
the extreme right-wing
group.
No reason was given.
The omission reflected the
growing trend toward en-
ding the special status of
West Berlin, the only part of
Germany still subject to the
rule of the three Western
allies: United States, Britain
and France.
The NPD is considered a
party of mostly "veteran"
Nazis seeking to revive the
traditions of the Third
Reich.

Sephardi Group
Holds Convention

New York — The 1990 An-
nual Convention of the
American Sephardi Federa-
tion, the largest gathering of
Sephardim in the United
States, will take place in
Chicago on Labor Day
weekend, September 2-4. The
Sephardic communities in
Chicago, Indianapolis, and
Detroit, which are sponsoring
the event, expect 1,000 par-
ticipants. Shirley Behar is
serving as convention chair-
woman for the Detroit area.
